Bucs drop series finale at Western Carolina

ETSU’s streak of six straight series wins stops in Cullowhee

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (April 26, 2026) – The ETSU baseball team dropped the series finale at Western Carolina on Sunday afternoon by a score of 13-2 in seven innings. With Sunday's loss, the Buccaneers move to 26-15 overall and 9-6 in SoCon play.

ETSU totaled 10 hits in Sunday's contest. Tristan Curless (2-for-4) and Luke Matlock (2-for-4) both had two-hit days to lead the charge for the Blue and Gold. Matlock launched his seventh home run of the season in the second inning. Henry Ferguson reached base three times with a pair of walks and a single, while Nate Conner, Jamie Palmese, Ian Guanzon, and Joey Little all reached base twice against the Catamounts.

The Buccaneers used eight pitchers in the seven-inning contest. Cooper Jones took the loss after allowing five runs on three hits in one inning, which dropped his record to 3-2. Tyler Kropis (0.2 innings) and Andrew Cotten (1.0 inning) both logged scoreless appearances out of ETSU bullpen to close out Sunday's matchup.

After a run came across for Western Carolina in the bottom of the first, ETSU knotted the score at one with a solo home run by Matlock.

However, WCU's offense stayed hot scoring five in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth to build a sizable lead on the Bucs. The Bucs had plenty of opportunities to chip away at the Catamount lead. An RBI single by Ferguson brought home Guanzon for ETSU's second run of the game in the fourth. Unfortunately, that was one of two hits that the Bucs had with runners in scoring position on the day (2-for-14) and the team left 14 runners on base on the day.

ETSU will return home on Tuesday when it hosts UNC Asheville in non-conference action. First pitch between the Bucs and Bulldogs is set for 5 p.m. from Thomas Stadium.
