JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 10, 2025) – The ETSU baseball team bounced back with a 10-6 victory against Wofford on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Stadium. Saturday's win improves ETSU's overall record to 36-13 and its SoCon mark to 12-5. The 36 victories are tied for the third-most in the history of ETSU baseball matching the 2011, 2013 and 2024 teams.
The Bucs had plenty of traffic on the basepaths on Saturday with 14 total hits and five walks. 10 of ETSU's hits on the day came with a runner on base.
Cody Miller and
Jamie Palmese both collected three hits and a stolen base in the win. For Miller, it was his 20
th stolen base of the season and he became the first Buc to swipe 20 bases in a season since 2015.
Cooper Torres,
Tristan Curless and
Lenny Montesano chipped in two hits each as well. Curless drove in four of ETSU's runs on the day, while Torres reached base four times and scored twice.
Sophomore
Jace Hyde turned in another stellar start for ETSU on Saturday. Hyde threw six-plus innings against the Terriers where he allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and three strikeouts.
Andrew Cotten worked 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits before
Brady Frederick was called upon to close the game out in the ninth inning to pick up his third save of the 2025 campaign.
Wofford struck first in the second game of the series. The Terriers used a pair of two-out hits to take a 1-0 lead on the Bucs in the top of the third. ETSU quickly responded in their half of the frame. Palmese and Miller both singled to give the Blue and Gold a good scoring chance. An RBI groundout from
Blake Jacklin brought in Palmese to score before Torres delivered an RBI single to plate Miller giving the Bucs a 2-1 lead after three.
The Bucs gained some major breathing room in the fourth. With one out on the board, the Bucs tallied five straight hits.
Joey Little and Montesano both singled to get things started before a double by
JD Yakubinis grew the Buccaneer lead to two, 3-1. Palmese and Miller both had run-scoring singles to push ETSU's lead to four, 5-1. After a successful double steal by Palmese and Miller, Torres was intentionally walked ahead of Curless. Curless made the Terriers pay lining a double into the left field corner to score all three runners and put ETSU up by seven runs, 8-1.
The two teams traded single runs in the fifth before Wofford scored a pair of runs in the seventh. ETSU got one of those runs back on another RBI double from Curless in the eighth to make the score 10-4 Bucs going to the ninth inning.
Despite trailing by six runs, the Terriers continued to battle. Wofford not only scored two runs, but it also had the tying run at the plate. Fortunately for the Bucs, Frederick struck out two of the three batters he faced to lock down the win for ETSU.
ETSU will look to clinch the series against the Terriers on Sunday afternoon. It will be Mother's Appreciation Day and all mothers will be eligible for special discounted ticket price of three dollars for general admission and eight dollars for reserved seats along with a special gift upon entering the ballpark.
