JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 11, 2025) – The ETSU baseball team closed out its home schedule with a 9-3 win over Wofford on Sunday afternoon from Thomas Stadium. The victory, which clinches the first series victory for the Bucs against Wofford since 2015, boosts ETSU's overall record to 37-13 and its SoCon record to 13-5.
After totaling 14 hits in its win on Saturday, the Buccaneer offense continued to roll on Sunday totaling 13 hits. All nine members of ETSU's starting lineup either tallied a hit or drove in a run to help fuel the victory. The Buccaneer bottom of the order was especially productive as their seventh thru ninth place hitters combined to go 7-for 13 (.538) with five RBI.
JD Yakubinis led the charge going 3-for-4 with two RBI, while
Jamie Palmese,
Henry Ferguson, and
Cooper Torres all had two hits as well.
Grant Gallagher drove in two runs, while
Cody Miller stole a pair of bases as well to round out the offensive leaders for ETSU. Overall, six of ETSU's nine runs in the win came with two outs.
ETSU used just two pitchers to secure the series win on Sunday.
Michael Harpster turned in one of his better starts of the season tossing 6.1 innings with two runs allowed on eight hits to go with three strikeouts.
Brady Frederick followed Harpster out of the Buccaneer bullpen and took the game of the rest of the way allowing a run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts to finish off the Bucs' 37
th victory of the season.
After Harpster threw a scoreless top half of the first inning, the Buccaneer offense struck first in the bottom half. Miller was hit by a pitch and then stole both second and third base to give ETSU a prime scoring chance. Torres, the team's RBI leader, delivered again with a double into the gap to score Miller and give the Bucs an early 1-0 lead.
Each team scored at least one run in every half inning through the bottom of the third. Palmese drove in ETSU's second run with a triple in the second before Gallagher came through with a two-run single in the third to make the score 4-2 Bucs after three innings of action.
The Bucs would add to its lead with two runs in the fifth and seventh to go with a single run in the eighth. Harpster worked into the seventh inning with just two runs allowed. Frederick allowed a solo home run in the ninth but allowed just one other Terrier to reach base in the final 2.2 innings to secure the victory for the Bucs.
ETSU will return to action on Thursday when it opens a three-game road series at The Citadel. First pitch for game one between the Bucs and Bulldogs is set for 1 p.m. from Charleston, S.C.
