GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 18, 2025) – East Tennessee State University softball shocked league-leading UNCG in the second game of its Friday doubleheader, taking a 3-1 win over the Spartans.
Freshman
Catlin Pennington was masterful inside the circle, throwing a career-high 6.1 innings and allowing just one run to earn her first career win. Pennington scattered seven hits and two walks with just one strikeout while allowing only three runners into scoring position all game.
The Bucs tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth when senior
Sara Muir was walked with the bases loaded. One batter later, sophomore
Makayla Veglia singled home
Cameron Young to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead.
In the seventh, ETSU added an insurance run when Muir drove in
Abigail Taylor. Muir tallied a pair of hits to go with her two RBI in the win, as did Veglia and senior
Riley Nayadley.
Eden Muncy entered with two runners on and one out in the bottom half of the final frame and promptly induced a pair of outs to deliver the fourth SoCon win of the year for the Bucs, earning her second save of the season in the process.
In the opener, ETSU's bats were quieted to the tune of just three hits by the Spartans' staff. Meanwhile, the UNCG bats tallied nine hits and six runs in the early contest, cruising to a 6-0 victory. Nayadley collected one of the hits for the Bucs to have a team-high three hits on the day.
ETSU will look to win its first conference series of the season at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
