JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 1, 2025) – The ETSU baseball team continued its stellar start to the 2025 season on Saturday as it picked up victories over Binghamton and Siena on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Stadium. The Bucs knocked off the Bearcats by a score of 13-5 before notching a run-rule win against the Saints, 14-4. With the two victories on Saturday, ETSU has now won six games in a row and improves to 9-2 on the season.
Binghamton Recap – Unlike in most games this season, Binghamton was able to score some early runs against the Buccaneer pitching staff in the first game of the day. However, ETSU's offense not only put numbers early but also late to overwhelm the Bearcats by a score of 13-5.
Cooper Torres had his best game in a Buccaneer uniform in the win going 3-for-5 with two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored.
Jamie Palmese and
Grant Gallagher also slugged home runs in the win, while
Cody Miller,
Lenny Montesano and
Tristan Curless all tallied two hits a piece to help fuel the Buccaneer offense.
After allowing just one run in his first two starts of the season, sophomore
Jace Hyde allowed four runs (three earned) in 5.1 innings on Saturday. Hyde struck out five Bearcats and notched his second win of the season to boost his record to 2-0.
Brady Frederick continues to be one of ETSU's most impressive relievers as he threw 1.2 shutout innings. Four of the five outs that Frederick recorded were strikeouts.
Cason Engert and
Jack Vest also made their 2025 debuts out of the Buccaneer bullpen to help preserve the win for the Bucs.
Siena Recap – Unlike in Friday's game between Siena and ETSU, the Saints had plenty of traffic on the basepaths on Saturday. Siena totaled 13 hits, but the Buccaneer pitchers did a wonderful job of limiting the damage as they stranded 11 runners and allowed just four runs to come in and score. Offensively, ETSU continued to pound the baseball with eight extra-base hits with three of those being home runs. With those factors working together, the Bucs tallied their second run-rule win over Siena in as many days, 14-4.
Montesano went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, four RBI and a home run to pace the ETSU offense. Montesano, who transferred to ETSU from Jackson State, is hitting an incredible .545 in 22 at-bats this season. Torres scored four times and added his third home run of the day. Gallagher continues to be one of the hottest hitters in the country with yet another home run against the Saints. After just 11 games played, Gallagher has already hit eight home runs in an ETSU uniform.
Henry Ferguson also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and knocked in two more runs for ETSU.
Carter Fink made the start for ETSU but lasted just three innings due to the traffic on the basepaths by Siena.
Carter Oliff and
Andrew Ronne put in some stellar work after Fink left the game. Oliff went two innings and allowed one run. Ronne got the Bucs out of a jam where the tying run was at the plate in the sixth inning and took the ball the rest of the way. Ronne allowed one hit, walked two and struck out three in two innings. For their efforts, Oliff was credited with the win and Ronne tallied a save.
Next Up – ETSU will wrap up the weekend on Sunday when another game against Binghamton. First pitch for that contest is set for Noon from Thomas Stadium.
