Bucs knock off Virginia Tech, 9-4

ETSU collects its first win over the Hokies since 2017

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 24, 2026) – The ETSU baseball team knocked off ACC foe Virginia Tech by a score of 9-4 on Tuesday night from Thomas Stadium. The Buccaneers improve to 17-6 overall and 14-1 in home games.

ETSU had four players have two hits in the victory. Tristan Curless continues to be one of the hottest hitters in ETSU's lineup finishing with 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBI, and two walks. Henry Ferguson (2-for-3, two runs scored, and three RBI), Nate Conner (2-for-3, two runs scored), and Luke Matlock (2-for-4, solo home run) joined Curless with two-hit outings against the Hokies.

On the mound, the Bucs used six pitchers to get the win against VT. Derek McCarley started the game and allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work. Stratton Scott threw three shutout innings and picked up his second win of the season. Logan Grass also had a stellar outing as he threw three shutout innings to close out the win. For his outing, Grass picked up a save.

Most of VT's offense came early in the game. A run came across on a double steal in the second inning and then another came across to score in the third inning on a fielder's choice.

Trailing by two runs, the Bucs got on the board in the third inning. Ferguson got the scoring started with a two-run double before Curless drove him in with a single to put the Bucs on top, 3-2. ETSU flashed power in the fifth. Curless launched a three-run home run to get things started before Matlock connected for a solo shot to make the score, 7-2.

The Hokies got two of those runs back. One on an RBI double in the sixth and another from a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

An RBI double by Conner and a RBI single from Ferguson in the eighth inning pushed ETSU's advantage back to five, 9-4. Grass, who entered the game in the seventh inning with two runners on and nobody out, took the ball the rest of the way and closed the game out for the Bucs. Grass allowed just one hit, one walk, and three strikeouts.

The Bucs will remain home this weekend when they host VMI for a three-game series. The first game of the weekend set is set for 5 p.m. on Friday from Thomas Stadium.
