JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 9, 2025) – The ETSU baseball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end on Friday as Wofford knocked off the Buccaneers by a score of 7-5. The loss moves ETSU's overall record to 35-13 and 11-5 in SoCon action.
Lenny Montesano drove in four of ETSU's five runs in the contest. Three of the four came on a three-run homer and then he drove in another run with a groundout.
Blake Jacklin also homered in a 2-for-5 effort at the plate.
Tristan Curless and
Jamie Palmese both had two hits as well, while
Grant Gallagher reached base four times via a walk. With the four free passes on Friday, Gallagher became ETSU's new single-season walk leader with 52 passing the previous record of 51 by Paul Hoilman (2010) and
Nick Iannantone (2024).
Only one of the seven runs allowed by ETSU were earned on Friday.
Carter Fink started on Friday and worked the first five innings. All seven of the Terriers' runs came against Fink but only one was earned thanks to three ETSU errors and a passed ball. Fink, who struck out five, was followed by some stellar work out of the Buccaneer bullpen. The trio of
Derek McCarley,
JR Fordham and
Colin Eaton combined for four shutout innings to close out the night.
Wofford scratched across a run in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit. The first batter of the game was hit by a pitch. That was followed by a stolen base, a flyout that advance the runner to third and an error chased home the first run of the matchup.
ETSU battled back in the second inning. Curless doubled and
Axel Melendez followed with a bunt single in front of Montesano. Montesano slugged his fifth home run in 11 conference games (ninth overall) to give ETSU its first lead of the series.
Another Buccaneer error helped Wofford put together a three-run inning of its in the third inning to regain the lead. ETSU tied the score at 4-4 in the fourth with the RBI groundout by Montesano to score Curless, who reached on a single.
Another three-run frame by the Terriers helped by miscues in the field from ETSU put the visitors back in front. Trailing 7-4, Jacklin connected for a solo homer to get the Bucs within two after seven innings of action. It was Jacklin's third career home run against the Terriers in five games played.
With six outs to mount a comeback, the Bucs brought the go-ahead run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings. Unfortunately, ETSU did not come through with a key hit to continue the comeback attempt and Wofford finished off the 7-5 win.
ETSU will look to even the series on Saturday afternoon in game two of the weekend set. First pitch between the Bucs and Terriers is set for 2 p.m.
