Last Time Out – ETSU completed its non-conference schedule with a 12-5 win at UNC Asheville on Tuesday. Tuesday's victory completes the season sweep of Asheville for ETSU and boosts the Bucs' overall record to 35-12 this spring.
One of the Best Seasons in History of Buccaneer Baseball – Tuesday's win at UNC Asheville was ETSU's 35
th of the 2025 campaign. Only five teams in ETSU baseball history have won more games than this year's team (1981 - 44 wins, 1980 – 39 wins, 2011, 2013 and 2024 – 36 wins). The 71 wins this year and last for the Bucs is the program's best two-year stretch since 1980-81 when it won 83 games in those two seasons.
Conference Championship Chase – With two weekends of conference play remaining, the Bucs currently lead the SoCon standings with an 11-4 record. ETSU holds a two-game lead on The Citadel and Samford for the conference's top spot. Should the Bucs win at least a share of the league title, it would be the first regular season championship for ETSU baseball since 1981. If they win the title outright, it'll be the first since 1980.
Pair of Power Hitters Nearing School Record – As a team, the Bucs have already shattered the program's single season home run record with 107 long balls this spring, which is the seventh-most ever by a SoCon team. Two key cogs in the power-hitting lineup for the Bucs are
Cooper Torres and
Grant Gallagher. Torres has launched 21 homers, while Gallagher has hit 20. They are the first pair of Buccaneer teammates to hit 20 or more home runs in a season since 2010 when Paul Hoilman and Bo Reeder accomplished the feat. Furthermore, Torres hit his 21
st home run of the season at Asheville on Tuesday and he became just the fifth Buccaneer to ever hit 21 or more home runs in a season joining Paul Hoilman,
Cameron Sisneros, Anthony Russell and Mike Nipper. Both players are within striking distance of the individual single season home run record held by Hoilman with 25 long balls in 2010.
Plenty of Patience – In addition to the power numbers, Gallagher has also been one of the most patient hitters in the country this season. Gallagher, who has drawn 48 walks so far this season, needs just four more free passes to break ETSU's single season walk record of 51 held by Hoilman and
Nick Iannantone from last season.
Steady Starting Staff for ETSU – Since the middle of last season, the Buccaneers have primarily used three starting pitchers during their weekend series in
Carter Fink,
Jace Hyde and
Michael Harpster. The trio of Fink, Hyde and Harpster have each started 12 games in 2025 and the Bucs have a combined record of 28-8 when a game is started by any of those three pitchers. Since all three players joined the program prior to last season, ETSU is 56-17 (.767 winning percentage) when Fink, Hyde or Harpster start on the mound.
Terrific Home Field Advantage at the Thom – ETSU has been dominant over the past two seasons playing at Thomas Stadium. Since the start of the 2024 campaign, ETSU is 47-12 (.797 winning percentage) playing at home. The 47 home victories are the most in the SoCon during that span and only their opponent this weekend, Wofford, has lost fewer games on their home field than ETSU has over the past two years.
About Wofford – Wofford will come to Johnson City with a 28-22 overall record and a 5-10 mark in SoCon play. The Terriers, who won the SoCon Tournament last season, are a team that relies heavily on speed and fundamentals. Wofford is fifth nationally with 145 stolen bases and lead the SoCon with 14 triples. The Terriers, who have also totaled 39 sacrifice bunts, have six players that have stolen 10 or more bases in 2025. Leading this charge has been James Layman with 23 steals in 29 attempts.
Series Rewind vs. Wofford – ETSU is 32-35 all-time against Wofford, including a 1-3 mark last season. The Terriers ended the Bucs' season last May in the SoCon Tournament by a score of 13-10. Recently, Wofford has held the edge, and the Bucs are looking for their first series win against the Terriers since 2015.
