CHARLESTON, S.C. (May 15, 2025) – The ETSU baseball team dropped the opening game of its series at The Citadel on Thursday afternoon by a score of 7-3. Thursday's loss moves ETSU's overall record to 37-14 and moves its SoCon record to 13-6.
Seven of the nine hitters in ETSU's starting lineup tallied at least one hit in the contest.
Cooper Torres collected the lone two-hit day by a Buc, which was his 24
th multi-hit game of the 2025 campaign.
Grant Gallagher reached base three times thanks to a pair of walks and a RBI double, while
Cody Miller and
Jamie Palmese got on base twice as well.
On the mound, the Bucs used three pitchers against the Bulldogs.
Carter Fink started the game for the Bucs and worked the game's first three innings. Fink, who saw his record dip to 6-4 with Thursday's outing, allowed four runs on seven hits on the day.
Landon Crumbley worked the next 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on six hits.
Andrew Ronne finished off the game on the mound for the Bucs and threw 1.2 shutout innings.
ETSU threatened with a potential big inning in the top of the first loading the bases, but the Bulldogs got out of the jam with no runs coming in to score. The Citadel used that momentum to score one in the first and two in the second to open a 3-0 lead on the Bucs.
The Blue and Gold answered in the third. Singles from
Blake Jacklin and Torres started the frame ahead of Gallagher, who doubled down the right field line to score Jacklin. An RBI groundout by
Joey Little scored Torres and Gallagher scored ETSU's third run of the inning on a passed ball. The Citadel promptly got one of those runs back with a run-scoring single to make it 4-3 Bulldogs.
No runs came in to score in either the fourth or fifth innings. The Citadel added to its lead with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to grow its advantage to four runs, 7-3, heading to the top of the eighth.
ETSU had a runner reach base in both the eighth and ninth innings but neither moved off first base as Citadel reliever Maddox Webb threw two shutout innings to finish off the 7-3 victory for the Bulldogs.
The series between the Bucs and Bulldogs will resume on Friday afternoon. First pitch for that matchup is set for 1 p.m. from Charleston.
