Last Time Out – ETSU made a late rally but dropped a midweek game to Radford on Wednesday by a score of 10-8. Wednesday's loss moved ETSU's record to 21-7 on the 2025 season.
More Hits for Miller – One highlight in Wednesday's game against Radford was the play of shortstop
Cody Miller. Miller matched a career-high with four hits in a 4-for-5 effort at the plate with two RBI. This continues a hot streak for Miller as he is hitting .439 with 11 runs scored, six doubles, four home runs, 12 RBI to go with four stolen bases in his last 10 games.
Steady as a Starting Staff – For the eighth consecutive weekend, the Bucs are scheduled to start
Carter Fink,
Jace Hyde and
Michael Harpster on the mound. This trio, which became ETSU's weekend rotation midway through last season, is joined by Wofford's Sheldon Egger, Cullen Condon, and Branton Little as the only other team in the SoCon to start the same three pitchers every weekend this season. Since joining the program at the start of last season, ETSU is a combined 45-13 (.779 winning percentage) in games started by Fink, Hyde or Harpster, including an 18-4 mark in 2025.
Leading into the Good Things for the Offense – The Buccaneer offense has been one of the best in the nation this season. On top of the power numbers, ETSU has done well at getting on base to start innings. In 235 leadoff opportunities, the Bucs have reached base 97 times (41.3 percent of the time). Of players that have led off an inning 10 or more times in 2025,
Grant Gallagher (.591),
Cooper Torres (.500) and Miller (.500) have gotten on base at least half the time.
Success in a Series – Entering this weekend's action, the Bucs are one of just 12 teams in Division I baseball that have not lost a series this season. Furthermore, ETSU has not lost a series at Thomas Stadium since last March against James Madison and it has not lost a conference series at home since April 2023 against Wofford.
About UNC Greensboro – The Spartans, who won the SoCon Regular Season Championship last season, are off to a 12-16 start in 2025. UNCG is 2-1 in SoCon play after winning two of three on the road at VMI last weekend. A couple players to watch this weekend for UNCG are pitchers Sam Murchison and Jay Miller. Murchison and Miller rank first and second among SoCon starting pitchers in ERA checking in at 3.40 and 3.38, respectively.
Series Rewind vs. UNC Greensboro – ETSU is 24-40 all-time against UNCG. The Spartans won two of three from the Bucs in the regular season, but ETSU knocked top-ranked UNCG out of the SoCon Tournament, 10-7. While the Spartans have held the historic edge, the Bucs won the last series that these two teams played in Johnson City in 2023.
