SPARTANBURG, S.C. (April 26, 2025) – East Tennessee State University softball lost both games of its doubleheader, 4-0 and 3-1 (8 innings) at Wofford on Saturday.
Senior
Riley Nayadley had four of ETSU's 13 hits between the two games, and two of the four in the early afternoon contest. Sophomore
Makayla Veglia added three hits for ETSU in the second game.
Wofford opened the scoring in the first game with a single to left field that gave it a 1-0 lead. The Terriers added to their lead in the second when Rivers Sampson drove in Kaylin Greenwood. One batter later, Hope Engle brought Kate Platte around to score.
Wofford would add one more insurance run in the sixth, but the three early runs were more than enough for Margaret Axelson, who allowed just four ETSU hits in a complete game shutout while not allowing any runners into scoring position all game, and the Terriers took a 4-0 win.
The ETSU offense got more traction in the second half of the doubleheader, putting together a nine-hit outing led by three from Veglia, two from Nayadley and two from junior
Brylee Mesusan.
Freshman pitcher
Catlin Pennington had her second solid outing in a row, keeping the Terriers off the board until the fifth inning when Greenwood scored on a single off the bat of Platte to take a 1-0 lead. Pennington limited the damage to just the lone run, and also made it through the sixth clean as the Bucs went to the top of the seventh.
Down to their last out, and after leaving eight runners on base through the first six innings, Mesusan and Nayadley delivered. Mesusan got on with a second-pitch single before Nayadley sent the first pitch she saw to the right center gap, which was enough to bring Mesusan in to tie the game at 1-1. Wofford got out of the inning, but Pennington sent the game to extras with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.
ETSU was unable to push a run across in the top half of the first extra innings the team has played all season, and Wofford had a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth to take the game and series, 3-1.
The Bucs will try to avoid the series sweep at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 27.
