SPARTANBURG, S.C. (April 16, 2024) – ETSU women's tennis player Sofia Markova was named the Southern Conference's Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. It marks the third weekly award that Markova has earned this spring and the ninth overall for ETSU. 
 
Markova played a key role in ETSU capturing the SoCon Regular Season Championship last week. The Nuremberg, Germany native helped the Bucs secure the doubles point against Furman with a 6-2 win. Markova then clinched the match for ETSU with a thrilling 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) win in No. 1 singles over Furman's Sara Snyder. The Bucs won the match 4-3 and clinched their first SoCon Regular Season Championship in program history. 
 
Markova and ETSU, which came in at No. 64 in the ITA National Women's Tennis poll earlier on Tuesday, will return to the court on Thursday when it opens play at the SoCon Women's Tennis Tournament. The top-seeded Bucs will face No. 8 seed UNC Greensboro at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday morning at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
