Women’s Tennis readies for match at No. 19 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 9, 2024) – The ETSU women's tennis team will face its toughest test of the 2024 season on Saturday when it travels to take on No. 19 Tennessee. First serve between the Buccaneers and Volunteers is set for 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for following on Saturday.

The Buccaneers earned their first win of the season last Friday when it shut out Middle Tennessee State, 4-0. That victory improved ETSU's record to 1-3 on the 2024 campaign. The Bucs have had a tough schedule so far this season. In addition to the match vs. MTSU, the team has also faced off against Kentucky, Clemson and Virginia Tech. A player to watch for the Bucs is Sofia Markova as she was named the SoCon Player of the Month earlier this week.

The 19th-ranked Volunteers will bring a record of 5-2 into Saturday's match against the Bucs. Tennessee dropped its last two matches to No. 7 NC State (4-3) and No. 18 USC (4-2). Even with those losses, the Volunteers has four players and three doubles tandems entering Saturday nationally ranked by the ITA. Sofia Cabezas and Esther Adeshina make up the No. 18 doubles team in the country, while Cabezas is Tennessee's top singles player checking in at No. 31 in the national rankings.

Saturday will be the 16th time that the Bucs and Volunteers have matched up and the first time since 2021. Tennessee is 15-0 all-time against ETSU, including a 10-0 mark in Knoxville.
