Softball splits doubleheader to clinch series win over Wofford

The Bucs win their second SoCon series of the season

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - East Tennessee State softball split game two and three of the Wofford series to clinch the second SoCon series win of the season for the squad.  The Bucs (17-23, 5-10 SoCon) fell 3-15 in the first game and upended the Terriers (28-15, 6-9 SoCon) 7-4 in the second.

GAME 1 NOTABLES (L, 3-15)
  • Hailey Porter led off for the Bucs and recorded her third home run of the season on the first pitch of the contest.  Porter also led the field in assists with three and tacked on two putouts.
  • Leinani Lutu sent her fourth home run of the season over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring in the final two runs of the outing for the Bucs.
  • Leilani Coleman-Tillman led the Bucs with two hits on three plate appearances.  
  • Whitney Boone, Maddison Stowell, Riley Croley and Talya Stonebraker were the four additional members of the squad to tally a hit, each recording a single. 
  • Riley Martens led the squad in putouts with five and was followed by Grace Vaughn with four and Boone and Stowell with three apiece.
  • Pitchers Taylor Suchy and Chelsee Toon boasted two assists apiece in the outing, with three of the combined four arriving on sac bunts by the Terriers.  
  • The team totaled 27 at-bats, three runs, eight hits, three RBI, two home runs, drew one walk and collected nine assists through the 21 putouts.
GAME 2 NOTABLES (W, 7-4)
How It Happened:
Offense started early for both sides of the box as Wofford picked up two runs in the top of the first and ETSU responded with three of their own in the bottom of the first from a trio of singles, a double and a hit-by-pitch.  The Bucs added a little insurance in the bottom of the third after a pair of singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Stonebraker to drive in the fourth run of the outing.  Pennington held the Terriers scoreless through five frames on the mound while the Bucs drove up the score, 7-2, from a trio of singles and a two-RBI triple from Lutu, her second triple of the season.  After a pair of runs crossed the plate for Wofford in the top of the seventh, Muncy subbed in for her second save of the season from four batters faced and just one hit.  
  • Catlin Pennington picked up her fifth win of the season in the circle and now leads all ETSU pitchers in wins.  The sophomore went 6.0 innings and faced 28 batters and surrendered just one walk and seven hits, registering one strikeout.  
  • Eden Muncy collected her second save of the season, entering with no outs and  in the top of the seventh and held the Terriers to just one hit to clinch the win. 
  • Riley Croley led the team in the field with four assists and at the plate going 3-4 with one run and one RBI.  
  • Riley Martens collected nine putouts in the outing for the team lead.
  • Leinani Lutu went 2-3 at the plate with two RBI and with a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth to give the Bucs the five-run advantage.  
  • The team totaled 29 at-bats, seven runs, 12 hits, seven RBI, drew two walks and tallied seven assists through the 21 putouts.

The Bucs return to action on Tuesday, April 21 at 6 p.m. ET in Cookeville, Tenn. for a midweek meeting with Tennessee Tech.
