CINCINNATI, Ohio (April 18, 2026) – East Tennessee State University Athletic Director
Dr. Richard Sander is being inducted into the Anderson High School Hall of Fame in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Saturday, recognizing his outstanding career as a basketball coach and his lasting impact on the program.
Dr. Sander led Anderson High School from 1972–82, compiling an impressive 118–72 overall record while establishing one of the top programs in the region. His leadership helped elevate the program to new heights, including a historic 1981–82 season in which Anderson finished ranked No. 3 in Ohio, the highest ranking in school history.
That same season, Dr. Sander was named Coach of the Year by both the Cincinnati Enquirer and the Cincinnati Post, while guiding his team to a No. 1 ranking in Cincinnati and a No. 1 seed in the district tournament. His teams consistently competed at a high level, earning multiple district tournament seeds and winning the 1981–82 Hamilton County League Championship.
Known for an exciting, high-scoring style of play, Dr. Sander's teams regularly led Cincinnati-area schools in points per game. The 1974–75 squad averaged more than 82 points per contest, highlighting the offensive success that became a trademark of his program.
Beyond the wins, Dr. Sander's legacy is defined by his impact on student-athletes. He mentored eight players who went on to play Division I basketball, proving his ability to develop talent and prepare athletes for success at the next level.
Sander's induction into the Anderson High School Hall of Fame adds to a decorated career that also includes his selection to the Ohio High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1982.
Now serving as ETSU's Director of Athletics, Sander continues to lead the Buccaneers with a commitment to excellence, building on a legacy rooted in leadership, competitive success, and student-athlete development.
