JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - East Tennessee State softball fell in the league-opening doubleheader versus the UNC Greensboro Spartans on Saturday afternoon. The Bucs (12-10, 0-2 SoCon) fell 0-4 in the first game and 2-3 in the second to the Spartans (21-12, 2-0 SoCon).
All runs scored in both contests were runs scored as a result of home runs, with the exception of the game-winning sac fly in the top of the eighth in the second contest.
GAME 1 NOTABLES (L, 0-4)
How It Happened:
UNCG started their ace in the first contest where she was able to hold ETSU hitless through the first five innings of play while her offense worked and brought in four runs from a single and three home runs in the first, third and fifth frames. The Bucs were unable to get runs on the board in the league-opener but drew one walk and two hits to ruin a perfect game and no-hitter.
- Whitney Boone and Tiare Rieger were the lone Bucs to get a hit on the board after a pair of singles through the left side. Rieger collected three putouts and one assist.
- Leinani Lutu drew the only walk of the contest and contributed three putouts and one assist on defense.
- Riley Martens led the squad with eight putouts and was followed by Riley Croley with three putouts and a tied career-high of three assists.
- Gabrielle Fowler dished three strikeouts through 3.2 innings of action and held UNCG to just three hits and one run.
- The team totaled 23 at-bats, two hits, drew one walk and gathered six assists through the 21 putouts.
GAME 2 NOTABLES (L, 2-3/8 inn.)
How It Happened:
The Spartans tallied a pair of solo home runs in the top of the second and top of the sixth to secure a 2-0 lead heading into the final frames. The Bucs had been held scoreless up until the sixth but had battled at the plate with two previous hits.
Payton Moore stepped up to the plate and fired off a two-run home run to tie score heading into the last inning, her fifth of the season and the fifth of her career. Both teams retired the side and the contest advanced to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, a Spartans double was pushed to third after a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a sac fly, the first run of the day to cross the plate from a result other than a home run. ETSU was unable to respond in the bottom of the eighth and UNCG captured their second win of the day.
- In her first at-bat of the outing, Payton Moore forced UNCG to deal 18 pitches, pushing 13 fouls in the plate appearance to wrap just two fouls shy of tying the NCAA single-at bat foul ball record of 15. Moore pumped out her fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to tie the contest and drive in the only runs of the day for the Bucs.
- Abigail Taylor boasted the team-high and a season-high of nine putouts in the contest, including an over-the-shoulder running deep long ball catch to end an inning and keep the Spartans scoreless in the frame. Her nine putouts is the most by an outfield this season.
- Riley Martens collected seven putouts and was followed by Tiare Rieger with five and one assist.
- Catlin Pennington threw her first complete game of the 2026 campaign and registered two assists. She saw 8.0 innings on the mound and surrendered only one walk and five hits in the outing.
- The team totaled 28 at-bats, two runs, five hits, two RBI and collected five assists through the 24 putouts.
