Martin Vergara turns in a strong showing at the ITA National Summer Championships

The transfer from Miami reached the doubles final at the Championships

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Aug. 12, 2025)Martin Vergara of the ETSU men's tennis team generated quite a bit of momentum entering the 2025-26 academic year with his showing at the ITA National Summer Championships over the last few days in Memphis. Vergara, who came to Johnson City after spending time with Miami and Arizona State, reached the doubles final and advanced to the quarterfinals in singles.

In singles, Vergara tallied victories against Trinity University's Kishan Kersten (6-0, 4-6, 10-3) and Virginia's Stiles Brockett (6-4, 7-5) before bowing out to Baylor's Luc Koenig (5-7, 7-6, 10-7) in the quarterfinals to end his run in the singles bracket.

For the doubles tournament, Vergara paired with NC State's Cody Benton. The tandem of Vergara and Benton was the No. 2 seed for the event and eventually reached the final. Following a bye to the quarterfinals, Vergara won their first match 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 against Cem Atlamis and Tyler Haddorff. They followed that win with another against Calvin Baierl and Arman Zamani by scores of 2-6, 6-4, 10-4. Playing in Tuesday's championship match, Vergara and Benton battled back from dropping the first set 6-3 to win the second by an identical 6-3 final tally to force a deciding third frame. The duo jumped out to an early lead but could not hold on as Luis Nakamine and Koenig ultimately prevailed, 10-6.

Players qualified for the ITA Summer National Championships by finishing at the top of the ITA Summer Points Race, reaching the semifinals of an ITA Summer Masters Series, and competing in any summer series tournament for a chance to be selected as an at-large.
