Bucs roll past UNCG, 17-3

ETSU scores its most runs against the Spartans since 2004 to begin the series

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 4, 2025) – The ETSU baseball team rolled past UNC Greensboro by a score of 17-3 in seven innings on Friday evening from Thomas Stadium. Friday's win boosts ETSU's record to 22-7 overall and 3-1 in conference action.

Every Buccaneer that started Friday's matchup played a part in the 17-run outburst. All nine ETSU players in the starting lineup scored at least one run and eight of the nine picked up at least one hit. ETSU's top two home run hitters added to their respective totals on Friday. Grant Gallagher slugged his Division I-leading 16th homer of the 2025 campaign, while Cooper Torres squared one up for his 14th of the campaign.

Torres and Cody Miller both had three-hit outings in the win for the Bucs, while Gallagher and Blake Jacklin both drove in four runs. The bottom of the Buccaneer batting order also produced with Axel Melendez scoring three runs and driving in two others. JD Yakubinis also chipped in a pair of hits and scored two. The 17 runs scored by the Bucs on Friday are the most for the team against UNCG since 2004 when they scored 18.

The seven-inning victory saw just two ETSU pitchers take the mound. Carter Fink improved to 5-1 on the season in his eighth start of the season. Fink scattered nine UNCG hits and allowed two runs and struck out four in six innings of work. Cody Carwile closed the game out on the mound for ETSU making his second appearance in a Buccaneer uniform.

UNCG struck first on Friday on a rare sacrifice fly to the shortstop. However, UNCG's lead was short-lived as Torres quickly brought the Bucs back even with a solo home run in the bottom half of the second. That home run extended Torres' hitting streak to 19 games.

The difference in the game came in the bottom of the third inning. ETSU sent 10 batters to the plate before the Spartans recorded their first out of the inning. Jacklin had a three-run triple and Gallagher added a two-run double to chase UNCG's starter from the game. Getting their first look at a reliever this weekend, the Bucs continued to add on and finished the inning with 10 runs scored. It was ETSU's highest scoring inning of the season.

The Bucs would tack on two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and one more in the sixth to finish off the impressive 17-3 win over UNCG. The 17 runs by the Bucs on Friday matches the season-high for ETSU as it also plated 17 in a win over Miami (OH) on February 23.

With wet weather forecasted for Sunday, the Bucs and Spartans will wrap up their weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday from Thomas Stadium. The twin bill is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. The series finale will begin roughly 45 minutes following the conclusion of the first game of the day.
