JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 1, 2025) – The ETSU baseball team will begin the month of April with a four-game home stand that begins on Wednesday with a midweek matchup against Radford. First pitch between the Bucs and Highlanders is set for 5 p.m. from Thomas Stadium.
Last Time Out – ETSU won two of three games on the road at USC Upstate over the weekend. The Bucs dropped game one to the Spartans on Friday, 19-14 but rebounded to sweep a doubleheader on Saturday by scores of 15-9 and 7-3. By winning their eighth series in a row dating back to last spring, the Bucs improved to 21-6 on the 2025 campaign.
Powerful ETSU Lineup continues to be one of the Nation's Best – As the calendar moves to April, ETSU's offense ranks among the best in college baseball. ETSU is the national leader in slugging percentage (.618), rank second in home runs (71), 11
th in batting average (.324), 20
th in runs per game (9.2) and 24
th in runs scored (248). The 2025 Bucs are just 23 home runs shy of breaking the school record of 93 set back in 2010 after slugging 14 home runs last weekend alone.
National Home Run Leader resides in Johnson City – A major part in ETSU's power numbers can be traced to the national home run leader,
Grant Gallagher. Gallagher, who launched three home runs at Upstate, now has 15 home runs in 2025. To put Gallagher's home run pace in perspective, ETSU's single-season home run leader is Paul Hoilman, who hit 25 homers in 2010. Hoilman did not hit his 15
th home run of that season until the team's 36
th game. Wednesday vs. Radford will be ETSU's 28
th game of the season.
Senior on a 17-game hitting streak – Senior
Cooper Torres is not far behind Gallagher in the national home run lead with 13, which is tied for third in Division I. In addition to the power numbers, Torres will bring a 17-game hitting streak into Wednesday's game with the Highlanders. Torres, who leads ETSU with 12 multi-hit games this spring, is batting .397 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI during his hitting streak.
Best Start Since – By winning two of three at Upstate last weekend, the Bucs are now 21-6. This is ETSU's best start to a season since 2019 when they started with the same record. In their 21 wins so far in 2025, the Bucs are outscoring their opponents 209-72. As an offense, ETSU is batting .337, while the pitching staff has a collective ERA of 2.93 in those 21 contests.
Terrific at the Thom, especially during the week – Playing at Thomas Stadium has been good to the Bucs over the last few years. Since the beginning of the 2022 season, the Bucs are 80-25 at home (.762 winning percentage), including a 18-3 record this spring. ETSU has been especially good at the Thom during midweek games played on either Tuesday or Wednesday during that time frame. During that period, the Bucs are 14-1 in home midweeks with the lone loss coming last season to Appalachian State, 9-6.
About Radford – Radford comes into this week's action with a 12-14 overall record. The Highlanders have nearly matched their win total from all last season (16) already in 2025. Speed has been key for Radford in 2025 as it has more triples than any team in the Big South (10) and it ranks third in stolen bases (51).
Series Rewind vs. Radford – ETSU and Radford have met 58 times over the years with the Bucs leading the all-time series, 35-23. The Bucs have won the last four matchups between these two programs, and they have also won six of the last seven. Radford's last win came in 2022, while ETSU came away with a 5-2 victory last season when the two teams met at Thomas Stadium.
