KENNESAW, Ga. (Feb. 28, 2025) – East Tennessee State University softball used an explosive first inning at the plate and solid pitching to pick up a 5-3 win over Saint Louis on the first day of the Kennesaw State tournament.
Junior outfielder Brylee Mesusan led off with a five pitch walk. Two batters and a stolen base later, senior infielder Cameron Young singled her home. After a passed ball moved Young to second, senior infielder Sara Muir hit an RBI double to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead. Four straight singles followed, as ETSU batted around and ran the lead to 4-0 after the first half inning.
Saint Louis answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three on a three-run homer. The Billikens wouldn't get any more runs across over the rest of the day.
The Blue & Gold got another insurance run in the top of the second, as sophomore infielder
Makayla Veglia, who finished with a team high two RBI on the day, knocked in Muir. The 5-3 score didn't change after the top of the second inning.
Muir finished in the circle after 2.2 innings after allowing the initial homer. Then, sophomore
Gabrielle Fowler entered and pitched brilliantly, scattering a pair of hits over 4.1 innings while striking out six to notch her first win of the 2025 season as she dropped her season ERA to 1.94.
Next, ETSU continues the Kennesaw State tournament at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, against St. John's.
