Gille opens play at French Open on Wednesday

Buccaneer alum eyes another run to title match at Roland Garros

PARIS, France (May 28, 2024) – A year ago Sander Gille and doubles partner Joran Vliegen had a run of a lifetime as they reached the finals of the French Open. On Wednesday, the Belgian duo hit the clay courts at Roland Garros as they eye another run to the finals.

Gille and Vliegen, who are the No. 10 seed in the men's doubles tournament, take on Nuno Borges (Portugal) and Arthur Rinderknech (France) in round one at 6:30 a.m. ET on Court 11.

Gille and Vliegan enter the French Open ranked No. 18 nationally and are coming into the French Open off some recent success on clay as they won the Monte-Carlo Masters back in April.

This marks Gille's fifth French Open appearance where he is 9-4 all-time. Last year's run to the finals was the first-career appearance in a championship match at a Grand Slam event for Gille and Vliegen.

The winner of Wednesday's match will face the winner of John Peers/Roman Safiullin vs. Yuki Bhambri/Albano Olivetti in the second round.

Gille, the 2010 ASUN Player of the Year, helped guide ETSU to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2009-12. The Buccaneer alum was a three-time first team all-ASUN selection. To go with his Player of the Year honor in 2010, Gille was also named ASUN Tournament MVP. Gille finished his collegiate career with 72 wins in the Blue & Gold.
