#64 Women’s Tennis opens SoCon Tournament play Thursday vs. UNC Greensboro

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 17, 2024) – Coming off one of its most successful regular seasons in program history, the No. 64 ETSU women's tennis team will look to add another accolade to its resume this week at the SoCon Women's Tennis Tournament. ETSU, which will be the No. 1 seed, will open the tournament with a match against No. 8 seed UNC Greensboro at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday from the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

ETSU clinched its first SoCon Regular Season Championship in program history last Saturday with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Furman. The Bucs boosted their overall record to 14-7 and 7-0 in SoCon play with the win over the Paladins. The team capped the regular season with an 8-1 record at home and it has won 10 straight matches against conference teams dating back to last season.

Following the Bucs in the SoCon Tournament bracket in seeding order are Furman, Samford, Wofford, Mercer, Chattanooga, Western Carolina, and UNC Greensboro. ETSU's quarterfinal opponent, UNCG, finished the regular season with an overall record of 3-18 and 1-6 in league action. Entering the conference tournament, the Spartans have dropped six straight matches with their last win being a 4-3 triumph against Western Carolina on March 16.

The Bucs have won 15 of the 17 all-time matchups against UNCG. ETSU, which shut out the Spartans 7-0 earlier this season, has squared off against the Spartans twice in postseason play with the Bucs winning both of those as well.

ETSU has won six tournament titles in its history (four in Atlantic Sun, two in SoCon), including last year. Since re-joining the SoCon in 2015, the Bucs have advanced to the championship final in every season. If the Bucs win this week's tournament it'll mark the first time that ETSU has won back-to-back tournament championships.
