James Madison starts fast in a win over ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 9, 2024) – James Madison started fast and defeated the ETSU baseball team by a score of 22-6 on Saturday at Thomas Stadium. With Saturday's loss, the Buccaneers move to 10-4 on the 2024 campaign.

For the eighth time this season, the Bucs had double-digit hits on Saturday finishing with 10. Eight of ETSU's 10 hits came from JD Yakubinis, Noah Gent, Cody Miller, and Ryan McCarthy as each player finished with two hits in the contest. Cameron Sisneros and Cooper Torres also tallied hits for the Bucs.

On the mound, the Bucs used seven pitchers on Saturday. Five of the seven hurlers made either their season debut or second appearance. Freshmen Sam George and Tyler Fetterman both had scoreless appearances out of the Buccaneer bullpen on the day.

James Madison did not waste much time in gaining the upper hand on Saturday. In the top of the first, the Dukes sent 13 hitters to the plate and scored 10 times. The Bucs committed a pair of errors and hit three batters to help fuel JMU's big inning.

JMU's offense continued to roll throughout the contest scoring four more runs in the second, two in the fourth, five in the fifth and another in the sixth to reach 22 runs scored. It marks the third straight season that the Dukes have score 20 or more runs in a game.

ETSU's runs came in the second, third and sixth innings. McCarthy got the Bucs on the board with an RBI single in the second before Yakubinis added a run-producing single of his own in the third. ETSU's best inning offensively came in the sixth when it scored four runs on six hits. The Bucs started the inning with four straight singles with the fourth coming off Miller's bat to score two. Brogan Jones notched his first collegiate RBI with a groundout before McCarthy tallied another RBI single to round out the scoring for ETSU on Saturday.

The final game of the three-game series between the Bucs and Dukes is set for Sunday. First pitch for that contest is set for 1 p.m. from Thomas Stadium.
