JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 18, 2024) – The ETSU women's tennis team will hit the road for a pair of matches against teams from the ACC this weekend. First, the Bucs will travel to take on Clemson on Friday before heading to Blacksburg, Virginia to take on Virginia Tech on Sunday. Friday's match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., while Sunday's is slated for a 1 p.m. first serve.

ETSU fell on the road at Kentucky last Sunday by a score of 5-2 in its first match of the 2024 campaign. The Buccaneers did pick up a pair singles wins against the Wildcats as Sofia Markova and Fernanda Carvajal both picked up victories out of the top two singles slots. While the Wildcats won the doubles point, the Bucs' duo of Carvajal and Daniela Rivera were tied 4-4 with Kentucky's team of Makayla Mills and Elizabeth Stevens who came into the match ranked 36th in the nation. Furthermore, for her play last week, Carvajal was named the SoCon Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Clemson will open its spring season on Friday against the Bucs. The Tigers tallied an overall record of 16-12 a season ago that included a 3-10 mark in ACC play. Clemson will be under new leadership this season as Boomer Saia was named the new Head Coach of the Tigers last June. Saia comes to Clemson after spending the past five seasons leading Iowa State.

Like Clemson, Virginia Tech will also be getting its 2024 season underway this weekend. The Hokies will play Radford on Saturday before welcoming ETSU to town on Sunday. VT went 10-14 last season and 1-10 in league play. A player to watch for the Hokies is Ozlem Uslu, who was named to the All-ACC Second Team last season as a freshman.

Friday will mark the first ever meeting between Clemson and ETSU in women's tennis. As for Virginia Tech, ETSU and the Hokies have clashed a total of 11 times over the years. ETSU and VT met last season and the homestanding Hokies came away with a 4-2 win. The Bucs have beaten Virginia Tech before as they defeated VT 4-3 in Blacksburg back on January 27, 2019.
