Junior bats .500 with five homers this past week
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 8, 2023) – Following his monster weekend against nationally-ranked Oklahoma State this past weekend in Stillwater, ETSU junior first baseman Cameron Sisneros (Littleton, Colo.) was named both Southern Conference Player of the Week and one of the National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball on Monday.
Both the conference and national level awards are the first of Sisneros' career. The first year junior college transfer from Lamar Community College has enjoyed a tremendous season as he's started 45 games, is batting .375 and has a team-high 66 hits, 12 home runs, 42 RBI, a .665 slugging percentage and is tied for the team lead with 15 doubles. He is also the toughest player to strike out in the Southern Conference with only 20 strikeouts in 176 at-bats.
This week, the junior slugger went 7-for-14 for a .500 average over four games, including a midweek matchup at Appalachian State and a three-game weekend non-conference series at No. 16 Oklahoma State. After the Colorado native went 2-for-4 with a single and a double in Boone, he posted video-game numbers against the nationally ranked Pokes. He went 5-for-10 with all five hits being homers. Other stats this week include a .588 on-base percentage, a 1.643 slugging percentage, eight runs scored and seven runs batted in.
After a solo shot in the each of the first two games of the series, the Oklahoma State pitchers continued going after him in the series finale. Much to their chagrin, Sisneros clubbed a two-run homer in the opening frame and two more solo shots in the latter innings to finish the day 3-for-3 with three homers, a walk, four runs scored and four RBIs.
With his seven hits this week, Sisneros improved his batting average from .367 to .375. His batting average has seen an even steeper climb dating back to March 18 at Tennessee Tech, as he went from a season-low .246 average to over .300 by March 24 against Samford. Since then, he's remained above .300 the last 26 games to rank among the best hitters in the Southern Conference.
Sisneros is the second player this season to homer in three straight games, joining teammate Garett Wallace (Sanford, Fla.) who accomplished the feat in March. Prior to this season, the last player to have three homers over three games was former Buccaneer outfielder Ethan Cady in 2021. Meanwhile, Sisneros joins Ashton King (Knoxville, Tenn.) as one of two players to hit three homers in a game this season.
While records of the last time an ETSU player hit five homers in a series were hard to obtain, Sisneros joined an elite company of players such as Derek Trent, Paul Hoilman, Clinton Freeman, Bo Reeder, Dylan Pratt and Matthew Scruggs to hit three or more homers in a series in recent history.
Sisneros is the second ETSU player to win SoCon and Collegiate Baseball awards in the same week along with senior pitcher Nathanial Tate (Manchester, Tenn.), who won on April 24. Sisneros is the first position player to win a weekly award this season.
Defensively, the first baseman had 23 putouts, six assists and turned four double plays — two of which started with a ball hit his way.
The Bucs return to Thomas Stadium tomorrow (May 9) for a midweek senior day celebration against UNC Asheville. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
