RICHMOND, Va. - East Tennessee State University's volleyball team fell in straight sets to William & Mary on Saturday, to close out the VCU Invitational at the Siegel Center.
East Tennessee State (0-5) led most of the first set until a 3-0 run by William & Mary (2-3) tied the set and gave the Tribe a 15-14 lead. A service error by the Tribe would tie the set for the final time at 15, as William & Mary began to pull away from the Buccaneers. A 4-0 run from William & Mary allowed them to lead 22-17, but kills by Phoenix Fogel and Elizabeth Aylward got the Bucs within 23-20. A kill and a block ended the set with the Tribe taking the 25-20 first-set win.
William & Mary led early in the second set as an ace by Teagan Horejsi gave them a 6-4 advantage. A Tribe service error followed by consecutive aces from Makayla Bays tied the set and then gave the Bucs a 7-6 lead. William & Mary battled back, taking a 20-12 lead. A kill by Karis Chatfield followed by an ace by Kennedy Boatman would trim the Bucs' deficit to 22-19, but the Tribe took the final three points of the set for the 25-19 win.
The Buccaneers started the third set quickly, taking a 7-3 lead. The Tribe responded with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 7. William & Mary managed to extend their lead to as many as 24-16; however, the Bucs cut their deficit to 24-21 with kills by Chatfield and Fogel followed by an ace by Ryan Jomo. Ultimately, the Tribe ended the set with a kill from Olivia Westfort, giving them the 25-21 third-set win and the 3-0 match.
