BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alex Kreutzmann surpassed 1,000 career assists, but East Tennessee State University's volleyball team fell 3-1 at Samford on Friday at the Pete Hanna Center.
East Tennessee State (2-11, 0-2 SoCon) and Samford (5-7, 2-0 SoCon) exchanged shots, as a kill by
Makayla Bays tied the set at 6. A 4-0 run by the Bulldogs allowed them to lead 10-6, but the Bucs responded with a kill by
Gianna Blair and
Karis Chatfield, an ace by
Elizabeth Aylward, and a Bulldog error to tie the set and lead 11-10. The Bulldogs went on another run to lead 18-15, but a kill by Aylward and a block by Blair and Mays got the Bucs back within one at 18-17. A 3-0 run by Samford gave them the set point at 24-18; however, the Bucs had a 4-0 run to get within 24-22. Despite the late rally, Samford ended the set at 25-22 with a kill by Ally Cordes.Â
The Buccaneers got the second set started quickly with a 6-2 lead. Samford battled back from its early deficit, as an ace by Alison Ohlinger tied the set at 8. The two teams exchanged shots, seeing nine ties, the last of which was at 23 with a kill by
Karis Chatfield assisted by
Alex Kreutzmann. An ace by Aylward followed by a Bulldog error allowed the Bucs to take the 25-23 second-set win.Â
Samford took a commanding 20-10 lead in the third frame. A kill by
Sophie Davis and Chatfield would get the Bucs as close as 20-12, but the Bulldogs continued their early momentum, taking the third set, 25-16.
The Bulldogs once again took the early lead, going up 10-3 on the Bucs to open the fourth. ETSU battled back, with an 8-2 run giving them an 18-17 lead. A kill by Cordes tied the set at 18, as the frame saw two more tied scores, with the final one being at 20 with a kill by Kreutzmann. The teams traded points, with the Bucs getting within 23-22. The Bulldogs ended the match with a Buc error and a kill by Cordes to take the 25-22 fourth set for the 3-1 match.Â
