Wofford picks up another close win over the Bucs, 6-5

Bucs get 4.2 shutout innings from the bullpen, but the Terriers hold on

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (May 9, 2026) – The ETSU baseball team dropped another close game on the road at Wofford on Saturday afternoon by a score of 6-5. With Saturday's loss, the Buccaneers move to 29-19 overall and 9-8 in conference play.

Eight of ETSU's nine hitters in the starting lineup picked up at least one hit on Saturday. Ian Guanzon logged the lone two-hit game by a Buccaneer on the day with a pair of singles. Andrew Hill crushed a two-run home run for his first long ball of the season, while Tristan Curless and Tyler Fetterman also knocked in runs for the Bucs on the day.

Michael Harpster made the start for ETSU on Saturday. Harpster allowed six runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts against the Terriers. Following Harpster, the trio of Stratton Scott, Tyler Kropis, and Derek McCarley combined to throw 4.2 shutout innings out of ETSU's bullpen. Scott was especially effective tossing four shutout frames allowing three hits, no walks to go with three strikeouts. He also retired 11 consecutive Wofford hitters during his outing.

Wofford scored one run in the second and two more in the third to stake its starter Cullen Condon to an early 3-0 lead. Condon began Saturday's contest with three perfect innings before the Bucs started to get to him in the fourth. Nate Conner got things started with a leadoff single and Henry Ferguson worked a walk to give ETSU its first two baserunners of the afternoon. Like he has so many times this season, Curless came through with a single to bring Conner around to score to make the score 3-1 Wofford.

The Terriers answered that run with three in the bottom of the fourth, which spelled the end of the day for Harpster. The big hit in the three-run fourth was a two-run double by Logan Tribble to grow Wofford's advantage to five, 6-1. A perfect relay by ETSU cut down another run at the plate to stop the deficit from growing any larger.

Hill's two-run home run came in the next half inning to make it a three-run game, 6-3. The Bucs continued to chip away in the sixth. An one-out double by Axel Melendez quickly came around to score thanks to a RBI single by Fetterman making the score 6-4 in favor of the Terriers.

The Bucs got within a run in the top of the eighth as Jamie Palmese scored on a play that featured a single by Guanzon and a wild throw by Wofford.

After McCarley got the Bucs out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth, the Bucs remained within a run of the Terriers heading to the ninth. Wofford's Austin Laughlin, who entered the game in the seventh, finished off a strong outing with a pair of strikeouts and a flyout to clinch the series win for Wofford, 6-5.

The Bucs and Terriers will conclude their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch for the series finale is set for 1 p.m. from Spartanburg on ESPN+.
