Baseball renews longtime rivalry with Appalachian State on Tuesday

Bucs and Mountaineers meet for the 147th time Tuesday in Boone

BOONE, N.C. (April 20, 2026) – The ETSU baseball team will head back out on the road on Tuesday as it visits longtime rival Appalachian State in non-conference action. First pitch between ETSU and Appalachian State is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.

Probable Pitching Matchup
RHP Stratton Scott (ETSU) vs. RHP Conner Barrozino (APP) – Tuesday @ 6 p.m. | Live Stats | ESPN+

Last Time Out – ETSU cruised to a 12-1 victory over The Citadel on Sunday afternoon in Johnson City. The victory not only clinches the sixth consecutive series win for the Bucs, but it also boosts ETSU's overall record to 25-12 (8-4 in SoCon).

Tristan Curless Named SoCon Player of the Week – For the second time this season, Tristan Curless was named the SoCon Player of the Week earlier this afternoon. For the week, Curless hit .688 (11-for-16) with two home runs, seven runs scored, three doubles, and eight RBI. The Amarillo, Texas native finished with an OPS of 1.987 in the four games. Curless, who also earned a win as a pitcher in the second game against The Citadel, is the first ETSU player to be named SoCon Player of the Week multiple times in the same season since Trey York in 2015.

Ferguson extends his reached base streakHenry Ferguson continues to be one of the most consistent offensive players in the SoCon this season. Ferguson, who is hitting .386, has now reached base in 38 consecutive games dating back to last season. Ferguson's 38-game reached base streak is the sixth-longest active streak in Division I baseball and the longest by a Buccaneer since Cameron Sisneros closed out his ETSU career by reaching base successfully in a program record 79 straight games.

Non-Conference Notes – The Bucs are 17-8 so far in 2026 against non-SoCon teams. A key in that success has been the team's ability to get key hits at the right time and the team's pitchers locking in similar situations. Offensively, the Bucs are hitting .353 with runners in scoring position in non-conference play, which includes a .333 mark with the bases loaded. On the pitching side, ETSU's pitchers are holding opposing lineups to a .232 average with runners on second or third and just .185 with the bases loaded in those same games.

Time to Visit the Tar Heel State – Tuesday's game will be the start of a four-game road swing for the Bucs in the state of the North Carolina as they will visit Western Carolina this weekend for a three-game series. Since the beginning of last season, the Bucs are 4-1 in the state of North Carolina with the lone setback coming at UNC Greensboro on March 20, 6-3.

About Appalachian State – App State will bring a 22-16 record overall into Tuesday's clash with the Bucs. The Mountaineers are coming off an impressive three-game sweep on the road at James Madison over the weekend where they outscored the Dukes, 43-20. As the run total would suggest, App State has a high-powered offense. The Mountaineers rank among the top 20 in the nation in team batting average (9th - .319), doubles per game (16th – 2.29), hits (18th – 423), on-base percentage (18th - .425), sacrifice flies (1st – 32), and runs per game (16th – 8.7).

Series Rewind against the Mountaineers – Tuesday will be the 147th all-time meeting between ETSU and App State in baseball. The Mountaineers, who have won 83 of those previous 146 contests, knocked off the Bucs in late February, 8-5. ETSU did win last season's game in Boone, however, 13-6.
