Softball secures series sweep over Furman

The first series sweep over the Paladins since 2013

GREENVILLE, S.C. - East Tennessee State softball secured the first series sweep of Furman for the program since 2013 and just the fifth in program history on Sunday afternoon.  The Bucs (15-11 3-3 SoCon) upended the Paladins (5-28, 0-6 SoCon) 8-6 in the series finale.

How It Happened:
Furman opened scoring after dropping three runs in the bottom of the first for their first lead of the weekend.  Lutu opened offensive action for the Bucs with a second-inning lead-off double in the third contest of the weekend.  Croley then walked and stole second for both Croley and Lutu to be driven in from a Porter single.  Brandon then singled to advance Porter to third to crossed the plate after a sac bunt from Martens to tie it up, 3-3 heading into the bottom of the second.  Furman tossed one run on the board to go up 4-3 in the bottom of the frame but ETSU answered with a single from Moore to be driven in on Lutu's second double of the day.  In the top of the fourth, a pair of Furman errors allowed Porter to reach third as the leadoff batter.  Porter then scored on a sac fly from Brandon for the 5-4 lead.  A third Furman error allowed Coleman-Tillman to reach where she advanced around the bases on a double from Suchy for the sixth run for the Bucs.  Furman responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and the pair was tied 6-6 through the fifth inning.  Porter stepped up an delivered a crucial solo homerun in the top of the sixth to send the Bucs up 7-6.  Moore followed suit in the seventh with her own solo blast for the 8-6 lead.  Furman was unable to respond after effective defense and Lauretta, Toon and Fowler remaining consistent in the ring and the Bucs secured their first SoCon series sweep under Cheryl Milligan.
  • Hailey Porter tallied her second career homerun with a long ball over the left field fence to send ETSU up 7-6.  The freshman shortstop went 2-3 with one walk and brought in three runs and three RBI.  Porter tallied the game-high of four assists in the field and three putouts.
  • Payton Moore boasted her sixth homerun of the season and her career to send ETSU up 8-6.  The sophomore second baseman went 2-4 at the plate with two runs and one RBI.  Moore posted three putouts and a season-high two assists in the field.
  • Leinani Lutu went 2-4 at the plate with two doubles, scoring one run.  Lutu registered two putouts in the field.
  • Cameron Lauretta collected her first win of the season after facing six batters and surrendering no hits and no runs through 1.1 innings in the circle.
  • Gabrielle Fowler collected her fourth career save and the first of the season, holding Furman hitless in the final inning for ETSU to claim the win.
  • Riley Martens collected the team-high of eight putouts.
  • ETSU has swept Furman a total of five times throughout the 26 seasons of the program. The most recent was two games in 2013.  Prior to that, two games in 2007 and three games in both 2002 and 2003.  
  • The team totaled 29 at-bats, eight runs, eight hits, seven RBI, drew three walks and registered eight assists through 21 putouts.
