KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 9, 2026) – The ETSU men's tennis team made the short trip to Knoxville on Friday to play a pair of matches against Tennessee. The Vols, who were receiving votes in the ITA National Poll, picked up 6-1 and 5-2 victories over the Bucs to open both teams' 2026 season.
 
The Vols earned the doubles point in each match on Friday. However, the duo of Oscar Martinez and Martin Vergara from ETSU went 2-0 on the day. Martinez and Vergara, who were ranked No. 61 in the ITA National Doubles Rankings, won matches by scores of 7-6 (7-4) and 6-3 to continue their stellar play together.
 
In singles action, the Bucs won a total of three matches on the day. Martinez and Vergara took one match each playing out of the No. 1 singles position and both players tallied victories. In the second tilt of the day, Carlos Gonzales notched his first win of the spring season, 6-0, 4-6, 10-4.
 
ETSU will return to action on Sunday when it visits No. 1 Wake Forest. First serve between the Bucs and Demon Deacons is set for 2 p.m.
