Three Bucs reach double-digit points versus Furman in SoCon opener

Anala Nelson reaches her second 20+ point contest at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - East Tennessee State women's basketball opened Southern Conference play on Thursday evening versus Furman.  The Bucs (7-9, 0-1 SoCon) fell in the conference opener, 70-72, to the Paladins (9-7, 1-0 SoCon).

NOTABLES 
  • Anala Nelson led the scoring efforts with her second 20+ point game since joining the Bucs in the offseason.  The graduate guard collected 22 points with four rebounds and two assists.
  • Meghan Downing, the senior forward, tallied a season-high 14 rebounds to bring her career total to 494, just six from 500.  Downing tacked on five points, one assist, two steals and two blocks in the contest.
  • Sophomore guard Carmen Richardson stunned in the fourth quarter with 10 points across four minutes of action and 14 in the half.  Richardson totaled 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal against the Paladins.
  • Sophomore guard Jaidyn Harper tied her career-high of 14 points, going 6-13 from the field with four rebounds and one steal.
  • The team totaled 70 points, 39 rebounds, nine assists, six steals and three blocks.

Q1
  • Downing was a top contributor from the jump, recording eight rebounds, three points and one block in the first frame.
  • The Bucs trailed by 12 after the first but put up 13 rebounds and 10 points for a solid opening quarter.
Q2
  • Harper went 3-4 from the field with seven points while Lyons, Lopez and Nelson each tallied at least three points.
  • The Bucs outscored the Paladins in points from turnovers (4-2) and second chance points (3-0).
Q3
  • Nelson led scoring with nine points while Downing led defense with three rebounds, two steals and one block.
  • ETSU worked their way to a 20 point quarter to close in on the Furman lead, coming within eight points to start the fourth.

  • Richardson fired up for 10 points with two rebounds and Nelson tacked on eight points with two assists.
  • The squad boasted their highest scoring quarter of the contest at 22 points, shooting over 50% from the field, three-point range and the free throw line.
