BLACKSBURG, Va. - East Tennessee State volleyball wrapped the Hokie Classic as the tournament champions on Friday afternoon. The Bucs (6-5, 0-0 SoCon) defeated the Blue Raiders (7-4, 0-0 CUSA) in four sets (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-14).
For their efforts in the tournament,
Makayla Bays and Belle Iosua were tabbed to the Hokie Classic All-Tournament Team and Bays was selected as the tournament MVP.
NOTABLES
- Makayla Bays continued her reign as the top offensive producer for the Bucs, boasting her eighth match of the season with double-digit kills and her fourth over 15. The sophomore outside hitter recorded her second double-double of the season, and the eight of her career, with her 15 kills and 12 digs, collecting one ace, two block assists and 12 perfect receptions in the contest.
- Bailey Gohlke, the freshman setter, notched her third career double-double, boasting 15 assists and 10 digs versus the Blue Raiders. Gohlke recorded back-to-back matches with a double-double and one or more aces in both matches of the Hokie Classic.
- Senior opposite hitter Belle Iosua recorded a dominate outing with nine kills at a .438 clip for the match-high with her five block assists.
- Whitley Rammel continued her pattern of strong offensive and defensive showings with eight kills on a .400 clip and seven block assists. The senior middle blocker has recorded three or more block assists in seven of 11 matches played this season, averaging 1.21 blocks/set in the campaign.
- Gianna Blair, the redshirt-sophomore middle blocker, was a force at the net, collecting a career-high two block solos, tying her career-high of six block assists, and setting a new career-high of eight total blocks.
- Brianna Cantrell, the senior outside hitter, and Melanie Morris, the junior libero, both recorded two aces in the match with their double-digit receptions. Morris also reached double-digit digs with 10 for her sixth match of the season in double-digits.
- Freshman outside hitter Chloe Smith put her first career statistics on the board with one kill and three block assists.
- The Bucs totaled 48 kills, 47 assists, seven aces, 59 digs and 28 total blocks in the four-set match.
