Volleyball downs Virginia Tech in four sets

Rammel, Bays and Gohlke led the Bucs versus the ACC-foe

BLACKSBURG, Va. - East Tennessee State volleyball upended ACC-foe Virginia Tech on Thursday evening.  The Bucs (5-5, 0-0 SoCon) defeated the Hokies (8-2, 0-0 ACC) in four sets (25-9, 19-25, 25-23, 25-19).

NOTABLES
  • In set one, the Bucs jumped out to an early lead with a 4-0 scoring run.  The advantage continued to grow, with another five-point run mid-set, which led to a set score of 25-9, the largest margin of victory in a set for the Bucs so far this season.  Through the first, the Bucs hit .889, holding the Hokies to .000.
  • Bailey Gohlke recorded her second career double-double, boasting 23 assists and 13 digs to guide the offense to a .222 clip.  The freshman setter dished four service aces for a career-high.
  • Whitley Rammel, the senior middle blocker, taught a blocking master class with three stuffed block solos in the match, reaching a career-high while hitting .471 with eight kills and no errors.
  • Makayla Bays continued her offensive dominance, remaining the team-leader in kills for the 10th match of the season. The sophomore outside hitter collected 19 kills for the second time this season with 24 perfect receptions and nine digs.
  • Senior outside hitter Brianna Cantrell recorded her most productive offensive outing of the 2025 schedule, tallying 10 kills with three aces.  Cantrell's defense paced her offense with two block assists and eight digs across the four sets.
  • Melanie Morris, the senior libero, collected a season-high 16 digs at 4.0/set with her 24 receptions and nine assists.
  • ETSU totaled 51 kills, 49 assists, seven aces, 60 digs and nine total blocks in the contest.

The Bucs will face Middle Tennessee State in the second round of the Hokie Classic on Friday at 1 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.
