BOONE, N.C. (April 22, 2025) – Behind 13 runs on 13 hits, the ETSU baseball team notched a 13-6 victory on the road at Appalachian State on Tuesday night. The victory, which boosts ETSU's record to 28-11, clinches the first season sweep of the Mountaineers for the Buccaneers since 2011.
Five Bucs recorded multi-hit games on Tuesday.
Cooper Torres led the charge going 3-for-5, finished a home run shy of the cycle and five RBI.
Cody Miller went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Grant Gallagher,
Gabe Juarez, and
Jamie Palmese all had two hit games as well.
Six different Buccaneers saw time on the mound on Tuesday.
Andrew Ronne (1.2 IP) and
Logan Grass (1 IP) both had scoreless appearances, while
Derek McCarley was credited with the win after tossing 1.2 innings. McCarley allowed one run on three hits to go with four strikeouts to pick up his second win of the season.
ETSU wasted little time in scoring the first runs of the game on Tuesday. The first five Buccaneers that came to the plate reached base to start the contest. Gallagher drove in the game's first run with a single. Torres then drove in two with a single of his own to stake the Blue and Gold to an early 3-0 lead.
The Bucs added to their advantage in the top half of the second. Palmese started the frame with a double down the left field line and Miller followed with a single through the left side of the infield. Jacklin executed a successful sacrifice bunt to give ETSU a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. Like he did in the first inning, Torres came through with a two-run doubles to make the score 5-0 after two innings.
The Blue and Gold tacked on one more run to its lead on an RBI groundout to move the score to 6-0 in the third. However, App State cut the deficit in half with a three-run home run by Juan Correa in third to suddenly make it a 6-3 game.
App State retired the Bucs in order for the first time in the game in the fourth and came back with another run in the bottom of the frame to make the score 6-4 ETSU after four. After 10 combined runs were scored between the two teams through the first four innings, both pitching staffs settled in and threw back-to-back scoreless frames.
Torres continued to be a problem for App State's pitching staff with an RBI triple to score Gallager in the sixth. The Mountaineers answered with one run of their own in the bottom half on an RBI groundout. It could have been much worse as App State had the bases loaded with one out, but
Andrew Ronne got the next two hitters to get out of the jam.
The Bucs logged their third multi-run inning in the seventh. Palmese brought home pinch runner
Joey Little with a double to make it make it 8-5 ETSU. The Bucs weren't done though as Palmese and Miller executed a successful double steal, but App State's catcher threw the ball away to score ETSU's ninth run of the night.
App State got a run back in the bottom of the eighth, but ETSU answered with a four-run ninth inning to ultimately put the game out of reach for the Mountaineers. The 13-6 win for the Bucs is just the team's second win in Boone since 2013.
Next up for ETSU will be a three-game road series at Toledo. The series between the Bucs and Rockets is slated to run Friday through Sunday. The opening game of the three-game set is set for 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
