Baseball readies for midweek matchup at Appalachian State

Bucs & Mountaineers set for their 145th all-time meeting

BOONE, N.C. (April 21, 2025) – The ETSU baseball team will continue its seven-game road swing on Tuesday when it visits Appalachian State. First pitch between the Buccaneers and Mountaineers is set for 6 p.m. from Boone, N.C.

Probable Pitching Matchup
RHP Landon Crumbley (ETSU) vs. RHP Cal Clark (App State) – Tuesday @ 6 p.m. | Live Stats | ESPN+

Last Time Out – ETSU won a road series by taking two of the three games at Mercer late last week. The Bears won the first game 5-1 but the Bucs rebounded to win the next two contests by scores of 11-0 (7 innings) and 5-4. The series win, which was ETSU's first in Macon since 2009, moves ETSU's record to 27-11 overall and 8-4 in SoCon action.

Plenty of Power for the Bucs – ETSU's power has been on display all season long. With 10 more home runs at Mercer, including a single game program record eight long balls on Friday, the Bucs have now hit 91 home runs in 2025 ranking behind only Georgia (105 HRs) and Tennessee (93) in Division I baseball. The Blue and Gold have a chance to make history as the Bucs need just two more home runs to tie the single season program record for home runs set by the 2011 Bucs (93 HRs). When/if the Bucs break that record, they'll enter the top 10 marks in SoCon history matching Mercer's team total from a season ago.

Shutout Stat – As impressive as the power displayed by ETSU has been, the Buccaneer pitching staff has held up its end of the bargain as well in 2025. As a staff, the Bucs lead the SoCon in shutouts (4), WHIP (1.28), hits allowed per nine innings (8.06) and ERA (4.28). Aiding the pitching staff has been some stellar work in the field as ETSU is tied for the SoCon lead with Samford with 30 double plays turned in 2025.

Buccaneer bats travel well – ETSU will be playing just its tenth road game of the season on Tuesday. Despite playing in an opposing team's park, the Buccaneer offense hasn't been slowed much. Collectively, the Bucs are hitting .301 with 34 home runs away from Johnson City. Additionally, over half of ETSU's hits on the road (52 of 100) have been for extra bases and the Bucs have a team OPS of 1.062 in those games.

Five is the Magic Number – A magic number for the Bucs in 2025 has been five. When ETSU can hold an opposing team to five runs or fewer it holds a 23-3 record compared to a 4-8 mark when the other team scores more than five.

About Appalachian State – The Mountaineers enter Tuesday's clash with the Bucs with an overall record of 21-18 (11-7 in the Sun Belt). App State has fared much better at home as opposed to on the road as 16 of its 21 wins have come in Boone. The strength of App State's team resides with its offense as it brings a Sun Belt-leading .298 team batting average into this week's play. Furthermore, the Mountaineers have the 11th-most doubles in all of Division I baseball with 89.

Series Rewind vs. App State – ETSU has played against App State more than any other opponent over the years with Tuesday being the 145th all-time matchup. The Bucs, who knocked off the Mountaineers by a score of 12-3 earlier this season in Johnson City, are 8-12 in their last 20 games played in Boone. If the Bucs can win on Tuesday, it'll be just their second win in Boone since 2014 (2021 being the other).
