JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 27, 2025) – East Tennessee State University women's basketball used a fourth-quarter comeback to knock off Wofford at home, 63-57, on Thursday.
Freshman guard
Carmen Richardson tied her career high of 16 points on a career-high 4-for-5 night from behind the 3-point line. Senior guard
Braylyn Milton added ten, while junior forward
Meghan Downing narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Points were hard to come by for both squads throughout the first seven minutes, as Wofford managed a 5-4 lead. The Terriers didn't hit a field goal for the last 7:57 of the quarter, and ETSU used a pair of triples from freshman guard
Lucy Hood and 5th year guard
Courtney Moore to take a 12-9 lead after the first ten minutes.
Wofford took the lead back at the start of the second and then led for a majority of the frame before Downing scored six by herself on three straight ETSU possessions to draw the game back to a tie. Moore hit another 3-pointer before the halftime buzzer to keep it at a 26-26 halftime tie.
After the halftime break, the Buccaneer offense opened on fire from behind the arc. Richardson got in on the scoring action with a quick pair of 3-pointers, immediately followed by two from senior guard
Kendall Folley. 5th year forward
Isabella Hunt then hit two jumpers before the ETSU offense quieted as the banged up Terriers squad, missing Rachael Rose, the 2024 SoCon Player of the Year and Helen Matthews, who led Wofford in scoring before sustaining an injury, got contributions from Evangelia Paulk and Maddie Heiss en route to a 46-45 lead at the end of the quarter.
Looking to avoid a second straight loss at home and what would have been only the third at Brooks all season, Milton and Richardson took over the game on both ends of the floor. The duo combined to go on a 13-2 run by themselves on the offensive end, while the No. 22 nationally ranked ETSU defense showed its mettle, holding the Terriers to 1-for-9 shooting from the field in the first six minutes of the fourth.
Wofford attempted to claw back in the game, but the ten-point lead granted by Richardson and Milton's scoring spurt was too much to overcome, and Folley iced the game with a wide-open layup with 25 seconds to play. A handful of free throws later, ETSU walked out with a 63-57 victory.
Next, ETSU stays at home for its senior night at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, against Furman.
