The Bucs enter the contest coming off an overtime loss to UNCG. It was the program's first overtime game since a double-overtime win over Western Carolina on Feb. 25, 2023.
Junior forward Meghan Downing played the best game of her career in the loss, scoring 18 (tying a career high) on 7-for-12 shooting from the field and 3-for-3 shooting from 3-point range (all career highs). Entering the contest, Downing had made just two career 3-pointers. The New Madison, Ohio, native grabbed ten rebounds for her second double-double of the season, and her five blocks also tied a career high. Downing is now two blocks away from breaking the single-season school record (currently 51, held by Serena Clark and Candace Gibson).
5th year guard Courtney Moore hasn't finished a game scoring less than ten points since Dec. 20, with eleven consecutive games in double-digits. Moore is the only player in the SoCon to score in double figures in every conference game thus far, and led ETSU with 19 against the Spartans.
Samford got leading scorer Emily Bowman back from injury at the end of January. The 6'5 Bowman, who didn't play in the first matchup, averages 11.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Kennedy Langham and Claire Johnson also provide scoring for Samford, which has won two of its last three, averaging 11.0 and 10.9 points per game, respectively.
The Bulldogs are the best three-point shooting team in the SoCon, making 34.5% of their shots from behind the arc.
In the first contest between the two teams this season, the Buccaneer defense lived up to its billing at home, holding Samford to just 48 points in a resounding win. Moore led ETSU with 16 points, and Downing, senior guard
Braylyn Milton and redshirt junior guard
Paige Lyons all scored ten.
ETSU leads the all-time series 13-11 and has won the last five games against the Bulldogs.
