ASHEVILLE, N.C. - East Tennessee State volleyball advances to the 2025 Southern Conference Tournament championship match on Sunday after defeating UNC Greensboro for the third time in the 2025 schedule. The Bucs (23-6, 15-1 SoCon) downed the Spartans (17-12, 9-7 SoCon) in four sets (25-18, 18-25, 27-25, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon.
The Bucs will compete for an automatic qualification for the 2025 NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon, looking for their fourth tournament title and the first for ETSU since 2017. Should the Bucs secure the tournament title, it would be the first time in program history ETSU is both the regular season and tournament champions.
NOTABLES
- Makayla Bays boasted her seventh match of the season with 20+ kills, and her third consecutive. The sophomore outside hitter accomplished the feat with a .350 clip and tallied her 17th career double-double with her 11 digs. Bays tacked on one block and one ace with 21 receptions.
- Freshman outside hitter Chloe Smith collected her second career start, and accumulated 19 kills in the four set match with five digs. Smith's 19 kills is good for the top-10 single game kills list for the season and is the most by a freshman in the 2025 campaign. Her most dominate set arrived in the third with seven kills hitting .400 and three digs.
- Four members of the squad tallied three or more total blocks - senior opposite Isabelle Iosua led with a career-high seven, senior middle blocker Whitley Rammel followed with six, redshirt sophomore middle blocker Gianna Blair collected three block assists and was the only member of the squad to record a block solo and freshman outside hitter Sophie Davis posted three.
- Junior libero Melanie Morris was a force in the backrow with 18 digs and 40 receptions, tacking on one ace and three assists.
- Setters Alex Kreutzmann (Jr.) and Bailey Gohlke (Fr.) split the offense with 24 assists and 25 assists, respectively.
- The Bucs totaled 58 kills, 55 assists, 56 digs, four aces and 21 total blocks.
