ETSU comes into the weekend on the heels of an explosive comeback win, erasing a double-digit second-half deficit to beat North Alabama 78-74 on their home floor in Florence last Saturday.
Jaylen Smith led the charge with 14 points and six assists in the second half to go with three steals as ETSU turned UNA over 14 times and scored 21 points off turnovers.
Brian Taylor II,
Cam Morris III, and
Jordan McCullum also hit double-digit scoring for ETSU. The Bucs return to Freedom Hall on a six game home winning streak dating back to February 2 against Furman.
The Eagles face their first Division I mid-major opponents of 2025-26 this weekend in year two under head coach Jonathan Mattox. MSU played at Wake Forest, Georgia, and Clemson in a span of five days earlier in November. George Marshall Jr. leads the offense for the Eagles with a pair of 20 point games this season including 26 points in 26 minutes at Wake Forest on November 7. Junior college transfer John Carroll also has a 20-point game to his name in the opener against Midway on November 3 and posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds at Georgia on November 9. Indiana State transfer Josiah LeGree had 11 points against Wake and a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists against Kentucky Christian on November 16.
The Warhawks dropped a home contest to Lamar 79-66 on Monday to fall to 1-4 to start the year, but their offense has a potent leader in Mississippi State transfer MJ Russell, who ranks sixth in the Sun Belt in points per game at 16.6 and has scored 15 or more points four times in five games and shoots 41.7% from beyond the arc.
Friday marks the 58th meeting between ETSU and Morehead State in men's basketball and is one of ETSU's oldest matchups with the two sides having first met in 1954. The Eagles won the last meeting 61-57 in Morehead on December 11, 2022. ETSU and ULM meet for the first time ever in men's basketball on Sunday.
