JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 24, 2025) - The ETSU men's soccer team gave its nine graduating players something to remember with a 4-2 thumping of Wofford on Friday at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
The Buccaneers (2-7-4, 2-2-0) had to weather early pressure from Wofford including a cross by Nathan Simes that landed at the feet of Samuel Byron for what looked like a tap-in on the back post until Emil Holmberg slid in and spoiled the party and kept the Terriers (5-9-2, 1-3-0) from breaking through in the fourth minute.
ETSU got the scoring started in the 18th minute when a Berkay Duman run to the left side of the box ended in a blocked cross, but the clearance attempt fell right to Henrique Cruz, who took two strides and curled the ball into the near post out of the reach of Wofford goalkeeper Pepe Hinterschuster. It was the Brazilian's second goal of 2025 and the fourth of his career.
The Buccaneers extended their lead at the half hour mark. After Nicola Brocca and Ulysses Hendriks collided at midfield, the ball fell to Cruz once more in the center of the park, and he slid it on to Gabriel Betancourt. Betancourt moved the ball to the right wing to Duman, who turned the ball on a first-time pass into the path of Sergio Baguena in full flight through the right side of the box. The veteran took one touch to settle and drilled the ball with his right foot to the back post for his second goal in as many games and the 28th of his college career.
Wofford clawed one back off a Jakob Andersson corner in the 42nd minute. Andersson connected with target man Nathan Simes who headed the ball down and off the post where it caromed off Max Talley and into the net for Talley's second goal of the season.
The Bucs went over the top in the 62nd minute thanks to Duman and Jaime Carrillo. After Duman curled away from the right touch line with the ball, he floated a long pass through the defenders that found Carrillo in stride, and the speedy Texan did the rest, racing away from the defense and dragging Hinterschuster out of his goal to leave himself a wide-open net. It was Carrillo's fourth goal of 2025.
Carrillo struck again moments later to put the game out of reach.
After Wofford failed to capitalize on a corner, a ball sent into the ETSU box landed at Cruz's feet, where he launched another long pass to Carrillo and found him in stride. This time, Carrillo chipped the ball over Hinterschuster to notch his second brace of 2025 and put the game out of reach for ETSU.
The Bucs were outshot by the Terriers 22-9 overall and 11-4 on goal. Holmberg's nine saves push his season total to 72, the third-most ever by an ETSU goalkeeper in one season, trailing James Holt's 80 in 2008 and Marc Kouadio's 82 in 2024.
The Bucs travel to Lexington looking for three points against VMI to put one last boost into their SoCon standing next Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm.
