Gent homers twice but Bucs fall to Samford, 9-6

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 13, 2024) – Noah Gent hit a pair of home runs but the ETSU baseball team fell to Samford by a score of 9-6 on Saturday afternoon. With Saturday's loss, the Buccaneers move to 20-12 overall and 5-6 in conference play.

Gent finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with those two home runs, a double and four RBI. It is the first multi-home run day by a Buc this season. Cameron Sisneros also hit a home run on Saturday. It is his second in as many days and his team-leading 10th this season. Cody Miller provided some protection for Sisneros and Gent as he hit in between those two players. Miller went 2-for-5 with a run scored. With his two-hit day on Saturday, Miller is now tied for the team-lead with 16 multi-hit games in 2024.

Andrew Ronne started Saturday's game for ETSU and worked the first five innings. Ronne saw his record dip to 4-3 after allowing five runs on 10 hits to the Bulldogs. Landon Crumbley had a good relief outing to close out the game tossing 2.1 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

After slugging three home runs in Friday's series opener, the Bulldogs hit another long ball in the bottom of the first on Saturday to jump out to an early lead. ETSU showed some power too in the second and third innings. Gent put the Bucs in front with a two-run home run in the second and Sisneros slammed one over the fence to grow the Buccaneer lead to two, 3-1, heading to the bottom of the third.

Samford got one of those runs back in its half of the third with an RBI single. The Bulldogs then scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and four in the sixth to put the pressure back on ETSU.

Gent connected on his second home run of the day in the seventh to shrink the deficit to four runs, 9-5. Jamie Palmese then drove in Ashton King, who reached on a double, with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to get the Bucs within three runs heading to the ninth.

After Crumbley held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth, the Bucs got the tying run to the on-deck circle in the ninth. However, a key double play by Samford stopped that potential momentum swing and the Bulldogs held on for the 9-6 win.

The Bucs and Bulldogs will wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch for that matchup is set for 2 p.m. eastern time on ESPN+.
