Bucs bounce back with a 4-3 win over UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 30, 2024) – The ETSU baseball team bounced back with a 4-3 win over UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon. With Saturday's win, the Buccaneers improve to 17-9 overall and 3-3 in SoCon play.

All seven of ETSU's hits on Saturday came from the first six hitters in its lineup. Cody Miller (2-for-4, two runs scored) and Noah Gent (2-for-4, two RBI) both had two-hit outings, while Nick Iannantone, Tommy Barth and Cameron Sisneros all picked up hits on the day as well.

Freshman Michael Harpster put together his best outing so far as a Buc on Saturday. Harpster, who improved to 4-1 on the season with Saturday's win, threw a career-high eight innings with two runs allowed on six hits to go with five strikeouts. The eight-inning start by Harpster is the longest start by a Buccaneer pitcher this season. Owen Kovacs came in and protected the Buccaneer lead in the ninth inning to pick up his fourth save of the 2024 campaign.

After scoring 39 runs combined in the first two games of the series, UNCG and ETSU were held scoreless through the first five innings on Saturday. The Bucs broke the tie in the top of the sixth as Miller hit a two-run home run, which was his first of the season, to give Harpster and ETSU a 2-0 lead to work with. The Spartans would get a run back in their half of the sixth to make the score 2-1 heading to the seventh.

A walk by Barth and a single by Miller got things started for the Bucs in the eighth. JD Yakubinis was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Gent was up next and came through with a clutch two-run double to extend ETSU's lead to three, 4-1.

UNCG scored its second run against Harpster in the eighth and another off Kovacs in the ninth on a solo home run and an RBI single. However, Kovacs retired the next three batters after the run-scoring single to finish off the 4-3 win for the Bucs.

ETSU will conclude its road swing through the state of North Carolina on Tuesday when it visits UNC Asheville. First pitch between the Bucs and Bulldogs is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
