Bucs sweep doubleheader from Wagner

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 2, 2024) – The ETSU baseball team clinched its third straight series win on Saturday with a pair of wins over Wagner at Thomas Stadium. ETSU won game one by a score of 12-6 before taking game two, 5-2. With the pair of victories, ETSU improves to 8-2 on the 2024 season.

Game One Recap – Like it has in all but one game this season, ETSU scored first in the series opener on Saturday. The Bucs had a trio of multi-run innings in the win that included five runs in the first, three in the fourth and four in the eighth inning.

Wagner closed the ETSU lead to a pair of runs with a three-run sixth inning, 8-6. However, the four-run eighth inning by the Bucs along with a stellar relief appearance from Derek McCarley finished off the 12-6 win for ETSU. McCarley, who picked up his first win of the season, tossed three scoreless innings, allowed two walks, and struck out four.

Offensively, the Bucs launched three home runs in game one. Jackson Green got things started with a two-run shot in the first. Cameron Sisneros, who has homered in each series opener this season, added a three-run blast in the fourth and Noah Webb connected for his third of the season in the four-run eighth inning. Ashton King had three of ETSU's 13 hits in the contest, while Nick Iannantone scored three times and worked three walks in the win.

Game Two Recap – The Buccaneers again scored first in game two. Sisneros got ETSU on the board with his second home run of the day and his fourth of the season to make the score 1-0 Bucs. Like Sisneros, Green homered for the second time on Saturday to double the lead to 2-0 ETSU in the fourth.

Sisneros added another RBI on a sacrifice fly in the fifth before Wagner made it a one run game with two runs in the seventh, 3-2. However, the Bucs answered back with a RBI single from Iannantone and another sacrifice fly from Tommy Barth to push the ETSU lead back to three, 5-2.

ETSU got stellar pitching throughout game two. Andrew Ronne improved to 2-0 on the season after tossing five shutout innings to start the game with five strikeouts. Kenny Keller then pitched the next 2.1 innings in relief of Ronne before Andrew Cotten came in with 1.2 shutout innings to close things out and earn the save.

On top of the home runs from Sisneros and Green, five other Bucs picked up hits in the win. Jamie Palmese had the lone two-hit performance going 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Barth, Noah Gent, and Ryan McCarthy also picked up hits for the Bucs.

Next Up – ETSU will look for its third consecutive sweep on Sunday in the series finale. First pitch between the Bucs and Seahawks is set for 1 p.m. from Thomas Stadium.
