SPARTANBURG, S.C. (March 15, 2024) – Three Buccaneers earned Southern Conference Athlete of the Month honors as the league office announced its monthly awards for February on Friday.
Diana Romero-Barba (women's track and field),
Daniela Rivera (women's tennis) and
Carter Fink (baseball) all received the accolade.
Romero-Barba had a record-setting month as she tied the indoor program record in the pole vault with a mark of 3.80 at the Darius Dixon Memorial back on Feb. 9. Romero-Barba cleared the record-setting jump on her second attempt, tying her with fellow Buccaneer greats Ashley Kessler (2015) and Katerina Vodova (2014). That was the third straight meet Romero-Barba set a new PR in the pole vault. Romero-Barba began the month with a second-place showing in the pole vault at the VMI Winter Relays, where she set at the time a personal best with a mark of 3.67. The Buccaneer finished the month earning a silver medal in the pole vault at the SoCon Indoor Championships with a mark of 3.67m
Rivera led the charge for the Bucs in a month where they went 5-1 with the lone loss occurring at #19 Tennessee. Rivera went 5-1 in singles play in February with the lone loss to the Volunteers. In doubles, Rivera teamed up to go a perfect 5-0 with partner
Fernanda Carvajal.
Fink led the Buccaneer pitching staff in the month of February. He tossed 8.1 scoreless innings and struck out nine batters against four hits and a walk. Was the winning pitcher in both of his appearances against Lafayette (February 16) and Rider (February 23). In his lone start, he tossed five scoreless innings against Rider.
