Probable Pitching Matchup
RHP Carter Boyd (App State) vs. LHP Derek McCarley (ETSU) – Tuesday @ 3 p.m. | Live Stats
Last Time Out – The Bucs improved to 6-1 on the season Sunday as they completed a sweep of Rider with
wins by scores of 5-4 and 11-1. The 6-1 start is ETSU's best through seven games of a season since 2019 when it also started 6-1.
Winning at The Thom – With the three victories over Rider, the Buccaneers are now 6-0 at home this season. At Thomas Stadium, ETSU is averaging 12.3 runs scored per game and its pitching staff has held opposing offenses to an average of 3.2 runs per game. Furthermore, it marks ETSU's first 6-0 start at home since 2019 when it logged back-to-back three game sweeps of Iona and Wagner. Dating back to last year, the Bucs have won seven consecutive games at home, which is tied for the seventh-longest active streak in Division I baseball.
Special K Numbers – ETSU's pitching staff has racked up a lot of strikeouts through the early going with 80 strikeouts in 59 innings pitched. The Buc pitchers have also held opposing hitters to a .203 batting average through the first seven games. If you take out the game at No. 9 Tennessee, ETSU pitchers are holding hitters to a .167 average. Individually, freshman
Jace Hyde leads the strikeout charge for ETSU with 18 in 8.2 innings pitched.
Six Home Runs to Complete the Sweep – In Sunday's series finale, the Bucs launched a season-high six home runs against the Broncs. Perhaps more impressively, six different Bucs homered in the contest:
Tommy Barth,
Noah Gent,
Jackson Green,
Nick Iannantone,
Jamie Palmese, and
Noah Webb. The last time ETSU homered six times in a game was on
April 9, 2022 vs. Western Carolina.
About Appalachian State – Appalachian State enters Tuesday's game in Johnson City with the same record as ETSU (6-1). App State is coming off a sweep of Siena, a midweek win over High Point and took two of three from Gardner-Webb in the season's first weekend.
Series History vs. Appalachian State – ETSU has played Appalachian State more times than any other program as Tuesday will mark the 142
nd matchup. App State holds the historic edge in the all-time series (80-60-1). However, the Bucs have won two of the last three meetings and are 4-2 against the Mountaineers over the last decade in the games played in Johnson City. The two teams split the two matchups last year with each squad winning on its home field (
5-0 ETSU,
14-6 App State).
