KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 21, 2024) – The ETSU baseball team dropped a 16-0 decision on the road at No. 9 Tennessee on Wednesday night. With Wednesday's loss, ETSU moves to 3-1 on the season.
The Bucs tallied just one hit on Wednesday against the Volunteers.
Nick Iannantone picked up that hit for ETSU and in doing so extended his hitting streak to 16 games dating back to last season.
Cameron Sisneros (hit by pitch) and
Ryan McCarthy (walk) also reached base for ETSU in the contest.
On the mound, the Bucs had five players see action.
Derek McCarley started the game for ETSU and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on six hits in 2.2 innings pitched. Knoxville native
Owen Kovacs tossed a scoreless inning for the Bucs in the fifth.
After the two starting pitchers exchanged zeros in the first, Tennessee opened the scoring in the second. The Volunteers scored a run without a hit thanks to an error, a walk and a wild pitch. The deciding inning on Wednesday, however, came in the third. Tennessee totaled 10 hits (three home runs) and scored 11 times in the third inning alone to open a 12-0 lead on the Bucs. The Volunteers added one run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to finish off the 16-0 victory.
ETSU will return home to Thomas Stadium this weekend for a three-game series against Rider. The series opener will be at 3 p.m. on Friday.
