Box Score Chattanooga ends first half on 15-2 run
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 14, 2024) –
Quimari Peterson netted a team-high 22 points and
Jaden Seymour added 19, but ETSU couldn't overcome Chattanooga's late first-half run as the Bucs suffered an 84-71 loss to the Mocs on Wednesday night inside McKenzie Arena.
Chattanooga ended the first half on a 15-2 run to lead by 15 at the break, 45-30. The Bucs, who trailed by as many as 19 points in the second half, clipped their deficit to six with just over seven minutes remaining, making it 64-58 following a three by
Ebby Asamoah. ETSU couldn't inch any closer to complete the comeback and the Mocs pulled away for the 13-point win.
The Mocs made 16 threes on 35 attempts, while shooting 53 percent from the field (28-53). ETSU finished 46 percent from the floor (27-59) and went 8-of-20 from long distance. The Bucs' shooting percentage was their second highest of the season. Chattanooga hit 12 of its 16 free throw attempts, compared to the Bucs going 9-of-15.
ETSU was outrebounded by 10, 35-25, while both teams grabbed 13 offensive rebounds. The Bucs scored 20 points off 17 Chattanooga turnovers, while also posting a plus-10 margin in the paint, 34-24.
Peterson, who was 9-of-17 from floor and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, also added five rebounds and three steals. Seymour was 6-of-12 from the field and made seven of his nine attempts at the charity stripe. The Buccaneer leader grabbed six rebounds and forced two steals.
Maki Johnson gave the Blue & Gold a spark off the bench as he accounted for 11 of ETSU's 17 points from the reserves. Johnson knocked down three triples, collected three steals and dished out two assists.
Chattanooga was led by Honor Huff's career-high 31-point performance as he accounted for nine of the Mocs' 16 threes.
With the loss, ETSU dropped to 13-13 on the season and 5-8 in league play, while Chattanooga -who swept the season series – improved to 18-8, 10-3.
Wednesday marked the 100th all-time meeting in the series with Chattanooga increasing its lead to 54-46.
ETSU heads to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on Western Carolina Saturday at 4 p.m.
