Bucs rally late, fall at Furman, 82-73

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Jan. 13, 2024) – Trailing by as many as 21 near the midway point of the second half, ETSU pulled within seven with just under five minutes to play; however, the Buccaneers couldn't complete the rally as Furman held on for an 82-73 win on Saturday afternoon inside Timmons Arena. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Free throw shooting proved to be the biggest difference maker as the Paladins were plus-16 in made three throws and plus-15 in attempts. Furman went 23-of-26 at the line, while ETSU finished 7-for-11. 
  • The Paladins made three more field goals than the Bucs (29-26) and one more three-pointer (8-7). Both teams hit at 44 percent from the field. 
  • The Bucs were plus-2 in the paint, 38-36, and both squads registered 16 second-chance points. ETSU grabbed 15 offensive rebounds to Furman's 14. 
  • ETSU held one lead on the night at 16-14 with 13:59 remaining in the first half, while the Paladins' largest lead came at 68-49 with 11:40 showing on the clock. 
  • The Bucs suffered their third straight setback as ETSU dropped to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in league play, while Furman – who evened the series at 34-34 – improved to 8-9, 2-2. 
TOP PERFORMERS 
  • Jaden Seymour scored a game-high 23 points, while adding four rebounds and two steals. Seymour was 9-of-16 from the field and tied a career-high with three triples. 
  • Quimari Peterson scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. 
  • Jadyn Parker just missed a double-double as he ended with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Ebby Asamoah added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. The duo accounted for six of the Bucs' seven blocks. Parker led the way with four. 
  • Allen Strothers played in his first game since Dec. 3 at Jacksonville State. Strothers finished with two points, four assists and two rebounds. 
  • Furman's JP Pegues and Alex Williams recorded 20-point scoring games for the Paladins. 
GAME SUMMARY 
The early stages of the first half were closely contested as ETSU grabbed a 16-14 lead following a three by Asamoah six minutes into the game. That marked the only Buccaneer lead as Furman used an 8-0 run to go up six and the closest ETSU would get was three, 30-27, thanks to a triple by Seymour with 6:17 left in the stanza. Furman eventually built a pair of nine-point leads and took a 44-37 advantage into halftime. 
 
Furman started the opening two minutes of second half pushing its lead into double figures as they led 51-39 at the 17:42 mark. After the Bucs clipped it to eight, the Paladins used a 16-3 run to take their largest lead of the night at 69-48 with 11:40 remaining. 
 
The Bucs battled and used an 18-4 surge to make it a seven-point deficit, 73-66 with 4:48 left in the contest. Unfortunately, ETSU ran out of gas and couldn't finish the rally as Furman picked up the nine-point win.

ETSU wraps up the South Carolina road swing on Wednesday night when the Bucs play at Wofford. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m. inside Richardson Indoor Stadium.
