?Bucs beat Chattanooga for first time since 2017 to claim top spot in SoCon
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 28, 2023) - After representing her home country on a massive stage, Sinoxolo Cesane (Cape Town, South Africa) brought a slice of Banyana Banyana magic back to Summers-Taylor Stadium with her.
Cesane scored 78 minutes into her return from international duty to lift ETSU to a 1-0 win over Chattanooga on Thursday night. The victory marks the Bucs' first over the Mocs since September 22, 2017. The win lifts ETSU into first place in the Southern Conference after three of nine scheduled games.
The Bucs (6-1-4, 2-0-1) had their first chance of the game in the fourth minute when Madi Hook (Fareham, England) put a header over the bar off a corner. They kept the Mocs (8-3-0, 2-1-0) off balance through the first 20 minutes before Caroline Richvalsky put a shot on goal to force a save from Ashton Blair (Knoxville, Tenn.). Little changed between the two teams afterward, and they went level into halftime.
ETSU put its foot on the gas in the second half, pressing the Mocs' back line and keeping possession in the attacking end of the field, culminating in a chance sent over the crossbar by Grace Eatz (Roswell, Ga.). Zoey Mize forced a save out of Blair in the 56th minute, but Chattanooga did not muster another shot on goal despite a number of set piece opportunities in the final 35 minutes.
In the 78th minute, Cesane saw her moment and took it. She linked up with Paige Carlsen (Johnson City, Tenn.), springing Carlsen down the end line with a pass to get her to the end line. Cesane continued to run, and Carlsen found her with a cross that Cesane steered into the back post with her right foot for her sixth career goal at ETSU.
The Bucs outshot the Mocs - the 33rd-ranked team in the country in shots per game - by an 8-6 margin, and both teams had three shots on goal. Blair recorded her fifth shutout of the season, tying for the second-most in a season in school history, most recently achieved by Lee Ann Cutshall in 2017 and second only to Shu Ohba's seven clean sheets in 2021.
The Bucs are back on the road Sunday against the Mercer Bears at 2 p.m.
